Emerging Trends in Superabrasive Wheel Market

From 2025 to 2027, the superabrasive wheel market will see a shift from selling in terms of volume to selling in terms of valuing specific applications. demand will grow in electric vehicle components, aerospace machining, medical devices, and semiconductor manufacturing as evidenced by Lucintel. Precision manufacturing, smaller tolerances, and extended tool life also show potential for growth.

• Automation: With the growing shortage of skilled labor, automated grinding cells are becoming more common. Japanese and German suppliers of grinding machines will integrate in-process gauging and closed-loop control by 2025 - 2027. Consistent diamond and CBN wheels will be needed in the next 3 – 5 years to address uncontrolled production.
• Sustainability: Customers are reducing coolant usage and the frequency of wheel changes while improving wheel energy efficiency. Dry or minimum quantity lubrication trials are reported in automotive machining for 2025, which indicates environmental factors are impacting customer specifications. Longer life superabrasive wheels will have an advantage as manufacturers focus on the total process emission rather than the purchasing price.
• EV Machining: Due to the increased sales of electric vehicles, machining of battery related components, lightweight alloys, and hardened drivetrain components will require more precise finishing. For the next 3 to 5 years, machining wheels will have be made of materials to machine ceramics, aluminum, carbide, and difficult to machine materials.
• Advanced Materials: Aerospace and semiconductor industries will use more advanced materials that include ceramic matrix composites, silicon carbide, and engineered ceramics. SEMI predicts sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment will exceed $100 billion in 2025. These materials require controlled grinding and will drive demand for premium diamond wheels.
• Regional Supply Chains: Risky trade conditions have forced buyers to develop backup sources for diamond, CBN, bond systems, and precision substrates. Localized production and shorter delivery timelines as a result of capacity expansions in India, Southeast Asia, and North America from 2025 to 2027 will drive changes in supplier selection over the medium term.

The fiercest competition will be for contracts in which multiple challenges of precision, uptime, and materials combine. Suppliers that provide process data and wheel engineering services will gain higher profit margins; supplier standard products will suffer from decreased margins. Strong demand for automotive electrification, semiconductor, and aerospace programs will last at least through 2027; however, the long qualification cycles will give local manufacturers the edge.

Recent Developments in the Superabrasive Wheel Market

The period from 2025 to 2027 will require more investment from the superabrasive wheel market due to growing demand for diamond and cBN tools from automotive electrification, semiconductor fabrication, and precision machining. The last few years have seen faster activity in the areas of automation, localized supply, and longer wheel life. Lucintel anticipates that companies will compete primarily on technology differentiation rather than capacity in the coming years.

• Capacity Expansion: In March 2025, Tyrolit opened a new production site in China for precision grinding, further developing its regional supply. The additional capacity will shorten lead times for the Asia-Pacific region and expand local sourcing.
• Strategic Collaboration: In June 2025, Saint-Gobain Abrasives broadened its partnership with machine tool builders to qualify Norton superabrasive wheels for automation in grinding cells. This partnership reduces the barriers for customers to adopt automation.
• Technology Launch: In September 2025, 3M launched new diamond and cBN wheels for the grinding of electric vehicle components. Wheels designed to have better cut rates and longer life will drive customers to buy based on performance rather than price.
• Production Automation: In January 2026, a major wheel producer from Europe announced a €20 million automation program for inspection and finishing. Automation will improve the commercial viability of grinding processes for customers in the aerospace and semiconductor industries.
• Government Approval: In February 2026, the Government of India approved a semiconductor fabrication project costing over ₹91,000 Cr which will create a large seller market for precision grinding in India. Demand for ultra-fine diamond wheels will be sustained by new fabrication facilities.

The market is transitioning away from standard consumables towards more advanced grinding systems integrated with machine data, application qualification, and overall cost analysis. Electric vehicles and semiconductor equipment will provide the greatest volume, but most aerospace business will reward suppliers for repeatable performance. Cost pressure will remain on traditional wheels, but the leading manufacturers should have sustained profit margins with advanced formulations and automation for the next five years and beyond.

Strategic Growth Opportunities in the Superabrasive Wheel Market

The period from 2024 to 2026 will shift demand from standard grinding toward more precise tools with longer life and specific application performance. The addressable market is increasing with industry investments in Semiconductors, Electric Vehicles, Aerospace and tightening Energy regulations. Lucintel’s perspective shows that in such an environment, suppliers will offer engineering services and advanced materials as part of their offering, rather than competing on grinding wheel pricing.

• Semiconductors and Electronics: Demand for diamond wheels for higher hardness materials such as silicon carbide and gallium nitride will increase and create opportunities for diamond tools specifically designed with thinning wafer applications. TSMC allocated $38 to $42 billion for capital expenditure in January 2025, and with the growing emphasis on clean and advanced packaging in power electronics, this opportunity will increase even more.
• Electric Vehicle Powertrain: With improvements in hardened parts and cycle time for battery and silicon carbide components, superabrasive wheels will have positive impact on production of Electric Vehicles. The International Energy Agency’s report of April 2025 showed that in 2024, 17.8 million EVs were sold worldwide. Within the next 3 to 5 years, the local production of EVs will generate repeated requests for customized specifications of production wheels.
• Aerospace and Medical Components: Superior margins can be generated by offering specialized diamond and CBN wheels for more advanced materials such as titanium, nickel alloys, ceramics and implant materials. As evidenced by Boeing’s 443 commercial deliveries in 2024, published in January 2025, aerospace recovery and the increased demand and traceability for medical components will create sales of qualified products provided at longer supplier relationship intervals.
• Sustainable Wheel Systems: As industry-facing efficiency gains become more apparent in user savings over disposal costs (i.e. longer-life vitrified and hybrid bonds, reducing coolant consumption, and using recycled steel), drum and wheel manufacturers can expect increasing demand through the effectiveness of their products. As the EU’s expanded Ecodesign regulations will take effect in July 2024, manufacturers will look toward the wheels that will minimize the total impact of the process, not just the initial purchase.
• Digital Manufacturing and Aftermarket Services: Future grinding processes stand to benefit from newly implemented sensors, potentially resulting in automated machine processes, real-time process monitoring, and its subsequent replacement. Siemens projected €19.1 billion as their total projected revenue for their digital industries division for fiscal year 2024, which was revealed in November 2024. Wheel manufacturers have the opportunity to compete in the marketplace should they focus their efforts on the design of durable, data-integrated wheels with rapid manufacturing services.

Technical substitution rather than broad volume will yield the strongest market growth. Wheel manufacturers stand to defend their current pricing and reduce lead times for new clients as they validate wheels within the potential clients’ processes. The current climate of regional manufacturing of various technologies (including semiconductors, EVs, aircraft, and medical devices) makes the opportunity for new wheel manufacturing businesses abundant. Standard wheel manufacturing will remain, but to acquire new customers, manufacturers will have to offer innovative application engineering solutions for increased productivity and sustainability.

Superabrasive Wheel Market Drivers and Challenges

Making up the superabrasive wheel market are technologies such as automation, sustainability, innovations, market regulations, and economic growth, along with challenges like market expenses, raw material, and workforce supply. There are advanced grinding solutions encouraged by growing customer demands from sectors such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, medical, and precision engineering. Barriers such as high costs and uncertain expenses make it difficult for a business to expand. Productivity and quality of goods while maintaining lower energy use are changing and redefining how companies compete. There is great opportunity for companies that offer wide diversity and sustainability in their abrasive technology along with digital control and super abrasive technology over the next decade while volatility in the global manufacturing industry exists.

The factors responsible for driving this market include:

• Precision Manufacturing: There is strong demand for fine finishing processes such as improving surface finishes and geometries, improving tolerances and other expensive components such as those used in the aerospace, automobile, semiconductor, and medical fields. There is strong demand for precision-machined components as in February 2021, it was reported that over 1.2 million units of electric vehicles were sold globally causing a spike in demands for drivetrain and battery component construction. High quality standards and increased production of complex components will sustain demand for superabrasive wheels in the coming years.
• Advanced Material Adoption: Manufacturers are now using a variety of advanced materials, including ceramics, composites, hardened alloys, titanium, and silicon carbide to improve strength, decrease weight, and improve thermal performance. However, these materials often have poor toughness and high hardness, which results in poor machinability and decreased effectiveness of traditional grinding techniques. Therefore, these material advances have actually increased the demand for superabrasive technology. By 2025, silicon-carbide wafer production continued to increase due to increased investment by power-electronics manufacturers for high-voltage applications. In the next 3-5 years, we can expect an increase in the usage of difficult-to-machine materials and a corresponding increase in demand for controlled cutting wheels with reduced thermal damage and longer operational lives.
• Automation and Digitalization: Current technologies for automated grinding cells, robotic systems, sensors, and process monitoring, and control software are decreasing the need for labor and increasing the consistency of the process. Superabrasive wheels are well suited for automated systems because their stable geometry and wear characteristics make them predictable for cycle time control. In 2025, the installation of industrial robots exceed 500,000 robots worldwide, reflecting the growing trend of automated production. Over the next 3-5 years, we will see connected grinding machines drive a new demand for wheel suppliers to offer digitally trackable products, process optimization tools, and services as well as traditional consumables.
• Sustainability and Energy Efficiency: Businesses expect suppliers to use less raw material, waste, energy consumption, and coolant. Superabrasive wheels help meet sustainability goals. Superabrasive wheels help by increasing wheel longevity, reducing material loss from grinding, and enhancing grinding wheel efficiency. In April 2025, the EU continued implementing industrial decarbonization policies. For the next 3-5 years, sustainability reporting, carbon emission reduction objectives, and procurement will award products that reduce lifecycle emissions and improve the efficiency and utilization of resources and increase the time between dressings.
• Manufacturing Investment and Regionalization: Automotive, aerospace, electronic, and industrial equipment sectors are experiencing significant new investment from new factories and reshoring and diversification of supply chains. This creates a significant need for grinding consumables and supportable technical services. In January 2025, semiconductor manufacturers’ capital spending plans remained in excess of $150B, driving demand for all equipment for precision processing and related abrasives. The next 3-5 years will bring significant new regional manufacturing opportunities for suppliers that enhance time between dressings and provide application support and customized wheel specifications.

The challenges facing this market include:

• High Product and Equipment Costs: Superabrasive wheels use diamonds or cubic boron nitride grains, specialized bonding systems, and a unique manufacturing process. In addition, they can require precision grinding machines, complete grinding machine systems, and coolant systems. In May 2025, industrial machinery prices for several manufacturing economies were high due to the combined effects of increases in metals, energy, and financing costs. In the next three to five years, these cost pressures will most likely slow small and medium-sized manufacturers’ adoption of new technologies, and suppliers will be forced to innovate longer lasting products, flexible pricing structures, and more reasonable return on investment packages.
• Complexity of Skilled Labor and Process: To achieve the best performance, users must consider cooling, dressing, and machine parameters. Most manufacturers have a shortage of experienced grinding technicians, leading to increased risks of poor quality, high energy use, and production output delays in manufacturing units. In August 2025, manufacturing labor surveys reported significant shortages of skilled workers across manufacturing economies. In the next three to five years, superabrasive wheel manufacturers will have to provide varying levels of product support to help users of their wheels reduce delays in manufacturing due to poor quality.
• Volatile Supply Chains and Regulations: Diamond, cubic boron nitride, metallic powders, resins, and precision machinery are vulnerable to geopolitics and transport disruptions, trade policies, and fluctuations in energy prices. Additionally, various environmental regulations can add to cost of compliance. For example, rules that govern dust, coolant, and chemical disposal, and the emission of industrial by-products, can increase operating expenses. In October 2025, international freight rates were particularly volatile due to disruptions to trade lanes and unpredictable capacity. For the next 3-5 years, incorporate multiple sourcing, regional buffer stocks, and more flexible regulation monitoring along with more recyclable materials to protect margins and assure reliable customer deliveries.

The emerging need for precision manufacturing and engineering, automation, and the processing of difficult materials are anticipated to drive growth in the super abrasive wheel market. In the near future, expanded technology focuses on process control and waste reduction, while increasing wheel longevity. Although this technology is available, the volatility of the economy and supply chains, coupled with high costs and regulatory requirements, will likely innovate only for larger manufacturers. It is anticipated that the suppliers that offer the most advanced wheel technology, automation, and improved regional service will gain the most market share. Ultimately, the ability to balance the competitive edge for innovative products with environmental compliance and Flexibility for the supply chain, at an affordable cost, will determine market success.
