Summary

The global automotive engineering environment is moving toward increasingly software-intensive vehicle architectures in which mechanical systems, electronics, embedded software and advanced driver functions must operate as an integrated system. Global vehicle production reached 96.4 million units in 2025, according to OICA, creating a large development base in which virtual engineering can support design iteration, system integration and validation across multiple vehicle programmes. Electrification is materially expanding the scope of automotive simulation. The IEA reports that nearly 22 million electric cars were produced globally in 2025, more than 25% above 2024, while electric-car sales exceeded 20 million. Battery packs, electric motors, inverters, charging systems and thermal-management components introduce coupled electrical, mechanical and thermal behaviours that require coordinated computational analysis during vehicle development. Vehicle-programme diversity is also increasing the importance of virtual development. The IEA identified 630 battery-electric car models available globally in 2025, with announcements indicating further expansion in model availability. A wider range of platforms, battery configurations, control strategies and vehicle packages increases the number of engineering combinations that manufacturers need to assess before committing to physical prototypes and validation campaigns. According to the research report "Global Automotive Simulation Software Market Outlook, 2031," published by Bonafide Research, the Global Automotive Simulation Software market was valued at more than USD 11.42 Billion in 2025, and expected to reach a market size of more than USD 24.64 Billion by 2031 with the CAGR of 14.02% from 2026-2031. Automotive simulation is increasingly extending beyond traditional CAE toward sensor, software and system-level validation. Simulation providers are developing environments that connect physics-based models with virtual sensors, high-fidelity environments, AI-assisted engineering and autonomous-driving scenarios. Ansys, for example, identifies electrification, autonomy and connectivity as major technology areas where simulation is being applied across design, testing and validation. The geographic structure of automotive development is becoming more diversified. China produced approximately 16 million electric cars in 2025, accounting for nearly 75% of global electric-car production, while Europe, North America and emerging automotive economies are developing their own electrification pathways. This creates demand for simulation environments capable of supporting different vehicle architectures, engineering standards, supplier ecosystems and regional development programmes. Market Drivers Electrified Powertrain Complexity Global electric-car production approached 22 million units in 2025, while electric cars represented one-quarter of worldwide new-car sales. Battery, inverter, motor, charging and thermal systems operate as interconnected subsystems, increasing the need for computational evaluation of energy flows, temperature behaviour, component sizing and vehicle performance before physical validation. Expansion of Software-Defined Vehicle Engineering Vehicle functionality increasingly depends on embedded software controlling propulsion, braking, steering, sensing and energy management. This shifts simulation toward closed-loop environments in which software behaviour can be evaluated against digital representations of vehicle systems. The resulting engineering requirement extends simulation from component analysis toward integrated hardware-software verification. Increasing Vehicle Model Diversity The availability of 630 battery-electric car models in 2025 illustrates the widening range of electrified vehicle configurations. More platforms create additional combinations of battery capacity, motor characteristics, body architecture, thermal systems and control strategies. Simulation allows engineers to compare these alternatives during architecture selection without building a physical prototype for every design path. Pressure for Faster Product Development Global competition is intensifying around vehicle development speed, particularly in electric vehicles. Ansys has highlighted the substantial difference between development timelines associated with newer EV manufacturers and traditional automotive programmes. Faster iteration increases the importance of virtual engineering because simulation can allow multiple design alternatives to be assessed before physical tooling and prototype resources are committed. Expansion of Virtual Validation ADAS, autonomous-driving and connected-vehicle functions create test conditions that can be difficult to reproduce consistently on public roads. High-fidelity simulation allows engineering teams to construct repeatable scenarios involving traffic, sensors, weather and vehicle responses. The ability to execute large numbers of controlled virtual cases is increasing the role of simulation in software-intensive vehicle development. Market Challenges Model Correlation and Validation Complexity High-fidelity simulation does not eliminate physical testing because computational models must be correlated against measured vehicle behaviour. Battery characteristics, material properties, tyre behaviour, thermal responses and sensor performance can vary under real operating conditions. Maintaining accurate models therefore requires high-quality test data, instrumentation and continuous correlation throughout vehicle development. Increasing Computational Workload Detailed multiphysics models, large ADAS scenario libraries and high-resolution sensor environments can generate substantial computational requirements. Engineering organizations must balance model fidelity with simulation speed and infrastructure availability. The challenge becomes particularly significant when manufacturers move from isolated analyses toward automated simulation campaigns involving thousands of configurations or operating scenarios. Interoperability Across Engineering Environments Automotive programmes involve CAD, CAE, controls, embedded software, testing, PLM and manufacturing systems that may originate from different technology providers. Connecting these environments without losing model fidelity or engineering data can be difficult. Standardized data exchange and compatible modelling workflows are therefore becoming important considerations when manufacturers expand virtual engineering across the development lifecycle. Shortage of Specialized Simulation Expertise Advanced automotive simulation requires knowledge spanning vehicle engineering, numerical methods, software development, controls, data management and validation. The increasing convergence of these disciplines raises the skill requirements for engineering teams. Organizations adopting sophisticated simulation environments may consequently require specialist training, implementation support and engineering services in addition to software licenses. Market Trends AI-Assisted Engineering AI is increasingly being integrated into automotive simulation as an accelerator for computational engineering. Simulation providers are developing approaches that learn from existing simulation datasets to support prediction, optimization and design-space exploration. Ansys has positioned SimAI and Engineering Copilot within this broader transition toward AI-assisted engineering workflows. Realistic Virtual Environments for Automated Driving ADAS and autonomous-driving development is moving toward increasingly detailed digital environments that reproduce sensor inputs and dynamic road situations. Integration between simulation platforms and high-fidelity visualization environments is enabling engineers to evaluate perception and vehicle-response behaviour without relying exclusively on physical proving-ground programmes. GPU-Accelerated Simulation The growing scale of computational engineering is increasing interest in GPU acceleration and high-performance computing. Automotive applications such as CFD, sensor simulation and large-scale virtual validation can involve computationally intensive workloads. Simulation platforms are therefore increasingly incorporating accelerated computing to reduce execution times and enable larger engineering campaigns. Digital Twins Across Vehicle Development Digital vehicle representations are increasingly being reused across design, validation and optimization activities rather than being created solely for individual simulations. This approach can connect component-level models with complete-vehicle behaviour and operational information, supporting more continuous engineering throughout a programme.
