Summary

The global dermatological drugs market stands at a pivotal juncture, commanding attention as one of the fastest-growing therapeutic segments in the pharmaceutical industry. Over the past five years, this market has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a predominantly topical-therapy landscape to one increasingly defined by sophisticated biologic interventions, targeted small molecules, and precision immunomodulators. The World Health Organization's Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly, convening in May 2025, formally recognized skin diseases as a global public health priority through resolution WHA78.15, acknowledging that the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 identified 4.69 billion incident cases of skin and subcutaneous diseases, responsible for 41.9 million disability-adjusted life years and ranking among the top 10 causes of disability worldwide. Skin diseases now constitute the third most prevalent cause of illness globally, with the WHO estimating that skin conditions affect approximately 1.8 billion people at any point in time. Approximately 125 million people worldwide suffer from psoriasis alone, while atopic dermatitis affects over 230 million people globally nearly four times more than those with psoriasis. These staggering epidemiological figures, coupled with the WHO's declaration of skin diseases as a global health priority, have catalyzed unprecedented investment in dermatological research and development, driving innovation across biologic therapies, JAK inhibitors, and novel topical formulations that continue to reshape the therapeutic landscape across all global regions. According to the research report "Global Dermatological Drugs Market Outlook, 2031," published by Bonafide Research, the Global Dermatological Drugs market was valued at more than USD 32.76Billion in 2025, and expected to reach a market size of more than USD 50.98 Billion by 2031 with the CAGR of 7.84% from 2026-2031. AbbVie maintains its commanding presence in the global immunology space through Skyrizi and Rinvoq, which have demonstrated exceptional clinical outcomes across multiple dermatological indications. Skyrizi delivered global revenue of $4.4 billion in the second quarter of 2025 alone, up 61.8% year-over-year, while Rinvoq global sales reached $2 billion, up 41.2%, supported by strong share gains across dermatology, rheumatology, and inflammatory bowel disease indications. The psoriasis treatment market exceeded $29 billion in 2025, with biologics accounting for approximately 44% of the total and the IL-23 inhibitor class now dominating new prescriptions. The FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research approved 46 novel drugs in 2025, with the Division of Dermatologic and Dental Drug Products playing a pivotal role in reviewing Investigational New Drug Applications, New Drug Applications, and Biologics Licensing Applications for dermatological therapeutics. LEO Pharma secured FDA approval for Anzupgo (delgocitinib) cream in July 2025 as the first and only topical JAK inhibitor for moderate-to-severe chronic hand eczema in adults. Incyte received FDA approval for Opzelura (ruxolitinib) cream 1.5% for pediatric atopic dermatitis in children aged 2 to 11 years, marking the first topical JAK inhibitor approved in the U.S. for pediatric atopic dermatitis. The competitive landscape reflects substantial barriers to entry, including the high cost of clinical development and complex regulatory pathways. Investment funding continues to flow toward novel drug discovery platforms, JAK inhibitor development, and digital health integration for dermatological consultations, while the expansion of online pharmacy channels adds lucrative growth opportunities across developed and emerging markets. Market Drivers ・ WHO Global Health Priority Declaration: The World Health Assembly's formal recognition of skin diseases as a global public health priority through resolution WHA78.15 in May 2025 has catalyzed unprecedented government attention and funding for dermatological research and treatment access. This declaration, acknowledging 4.69 billion incident cases and 41.9 million DALYs from skin conditions, has accelerated policy development, increased healthcare budgets for dermatology, and driven pharmaceutical innovation across all regions. The resolution mandates the development of a Global Action Plan focusing on prevention, early detection, effective treatment, and equitable access to affordable, high-quality services. ・ Accelerated Regulatory Approvals: Regulatory authorities worldwide have dramatically accelerated dermatological drug approvals, expanding treatment options across all patient populations. The FDA approved Anzupgo (delgocitinib) as the first topical JAK inhibitor for chronic hand eczema in July 2025 and approved ruxolitinib cream for pediatric atopic dermatitis in children as young as 2 years. Dupilumab received approval for chronic spontaneous urticaria in patients 12 years and older, while the first gene therapy for recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa was approved in April 2025. These regulatory actions drive market growth through increased patient access and earlier therapeutic intervention. Market Challenges ・ Biologic Therapy Cost Barriers: Advanced dermatological treatments, particularly biologics and specialty drugs, impose substantial financial burdens on healthcare systems and patients worldwide. Biologics for psoriasis and atopic dermatitis carry annual costs reaching thousands of dollars per patient, challenging access and adherence across many regions. These high costs exert tremendous pressure on public health service budgets, particularly in emerging economies where healthcare funding remains constrained. The financial burden translates into lower treatment adherence, compromising therapeutic outcomes and limiting the efficacy of dermatological drugs in managing chronic conditions. ・ Healthcare Access Disparities: Significant disparities in dermatological care access persist across global regions, with developing countries facing acute shortages of dermatology specialists and essential medicines. The WHO acknowledges that most skin disease burden in any community is caused by approximately 10 common diagnoses, yet inadequate numbers of health and care workers, including specialist practitioners, limit effective care delivery. These access gaps delay diagnosis and treatment, particularly in hard-to-reach communities, while the lack of routine surveillance may underestimate the true burden of skin diseases globally. Market Trends ・ JAK Inhibitor Therapeutic Expansion: Janus kinase inhibitors represent a transformative drug class gaining unprecedented momentum across global dermatology. The FDA approved Anzupgo (delgocitinib) as the first topical JAK inhibitor for chronic hand eczema in July 2025. Ruxolitinib cream received expanded approval for pediatric atopic dermatitis in children aged 2 to 11 years, marking the first topical JAK inhibitor approved for pediatric AD. The approval of icotrokinra in March 2026 as the first oral targeted peptide blocking the IL-23 receptor offers biologic-level efficacy in a once-daily pill. These approvals reflect growing clinical acceptance of JAK inhibitors across multiple indications and patient populations. ・ Pediatric Dermatology Innovation: Regulatory approvals increasingly target pediatric populations, addressing significant unmet needs in younger patients. The FDA approved ruxolitinib cream for atopic dermatitis in children aged 2 to less than 12 years, providing a steroid-free treatment option for young patients. Roflumilast 0.3% foam received FDA approval for plaque psoriasis of the scalp and body in patients 12 years and older. Dupilumab was approved for adolescents and adults with chronic spontaneous urticaria. These pediatric expansions create new growth opportunities and address critical gaps in pediatric dermatological care. Psoriasis dominates the global dermatological drugs market due to its substantial prevalence worldwide and the high proportion of patients requiring advanced biologic therapies. Psoriasis represents the largest indication in the global dermatological drugs market, driven by the immense patient population across all regions. Approximately 125 million people worldwide suffer from psoriasis, representing 2% to 3% of the global population. The global psoriasis treatment market exceeded $29 billion in 2025, with biologics accounting for approximately 44% of the total and the IL-23 inhibitor class now dominating new prescriptions. Skyrizi is on track for $17.3 billion in total 2025 sales, demonstrating the immense commercial potential of psoriasis therapeutics. Plaque psoriasis affects 85% to 90% of all psoriasis patients. The chronic, systemic nature of psoriasis necessitates long-term treatment, driving sustained prescription volumes. Approximately 20% to 30% of psoriasis patients develop psoriatic arthritis, expanding the therapeutic addressable population. Increasing awareness and earlier diagnosis continue to expand the addressable patient population globally. The availability of biologic therapies, including IL-17 and IL-23 inhibitors, has expanded treatment options for moderate-to-severe cases. Bimzelx (bimekizumab), the first dual IL-17A/F inhibitor, surpassed €2.2 billion in 2025 net sales, demonstrating the strong market demand for innovative psoriasis treatments.
