Highlights from this report:
What are the latest developments on the global smart street lighting market? Electrified public street lighting infrastructure has been around since the late 19th century to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety as well as to provide increased comfort to all users of the streets. Today, several hundred million street lights have been installed worldwide and the technology is now close to ubiquitous in all major urban areas of the developed world. The street lighting infrastructure however often constitutes major cost centres in terms of energy consumption and maintenance work, and also accounts for a significant share of the total greenhouse gas emissions that a city generates. In addition, static lighting schemes contribute to unnecessary light pollution, which could have harmful impacts on both humans and environmental ecosystems. Along with the developments in IoT communications and energy-efficient LED technology, smart street lighting systems that enable remote monitoring, control and management of street lighting networks have emerged to address these issues and allow authorities and utilities to achieve significant cost and energy savings while at the same time improving the societal benefits provided to citizens. In recent years, smart street lighting infrastructure has moreover emerged as a promising platform for the management of a variety of additional smart city devices. Berg Insight estimates that the global installed base of individually controlled smart street lights amounted to 38.5 million units at the end of 2025. Growing at a CAGR of 17.9 percent, the number will reach 87.6 million in 2030. Europe is the leading adopter and today accounts for around 36 percent of the global installed base. North America is meanwhile the second largest market representing 29 percent of the global installed base. A variety of proprietary RF networking platforms together account for 52 percent of the individually controlled street lights while cellular, and public and private LoRa communications are the second and third most common connectivity technologies respectively. The majority of the LoRa deployments are leveraging LoRaWAN networks. At the end of 2025, the leading smart street lighting vendor was Signify with an installed base of about 6.2 million lighting controls, followed by US-based Itron and the Chinese vendor Fonda Technology. 2026-09-23 Press releases According to a new research report from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the installed base of smart street lights amounted to 38.5 million worldwide at the end of 2025. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.9 percent, the installed base will reach 87.6 million by the end of 2030. Europe leads the adoption of smart street lighting technology and accounted for as much as 36 percent of the global installed base in 2025. North America meanwhile accounted for 29 percent of the global installed base and was the second largest region in 2025. China was at the same time alone home to around 15 percent of the installed base of smart street lights worldwide. The world’s leading smart street lighting vendor is Signify, which at the end of 2025 had an installed base of about 6.2 million lighting control units (LCUs). The company climbed to pole position after acquiring the former market leader Telensa in July 2021. Included in the top three were also US-based Itron and Chinese Fonda Technology, of which the latter has 50 percent of its lighting controllers deployed in the domestic market. In total, the top three vendors accounted for almost a third of the global installed base of individually controlled smart street lights. Itron furthermore also constitutes a global leader in the networking segment. Major smart street lighting players also include Ubicquia, Acuity Brands, Dimonoff and LED Roadway Lighting from North America; Schréder from Belgium; CityLight.net from Latvia; Revetec and DigitalPlatforms (formerly Umpi) from Italy; Flashnet (Lucy Group) from Romania; Rongwen Energy Technology Group from China; and ST Engineering Telematics Wireless from Singapore/Israel. “With more than 100 vendors competing in the smart street lighting market, surpassing one million deployed LCUs remains a milestone achieved by only a handful of companies. However, an increasing number of additional vendors are now approaching this level, showing how rapidly smart street lighting is moving”, said Filip Andersson, IoT analyst, Berg Insight. “In a growing number of markets, LCUs are increasingly becoming part of the standard specification for new LED modernisation and replacement projects”, continued Mr. Andersson. Rising energy costs, stricter sustainability targets and greater attention to the environmental impact of public lighting continue to strengthen the business case for smart street lighting. Meanwhile, the operational benefits of the technology are driving adoption among major utilities, especially in North America. Proprietary RF mesh technologies continue to account for a large share of the installed base, reflecting their strong position in many of the large-scale projects deployed during the past decade. However, cellular technologies are gaining ground across several regions. “Cellular connectivity has become a much more established alternative in the smart street lighting market where its plug-and-play characteristics, broad network availability and attractive cost structure make it suitable for projects where simplicity is important”, concluded Mr. Andersson. Cellular technologies are expected to be the fastest growing connectivity category in the market over the coming years.
