Outdoor lighting systems have become a focal point for businesses and governments looking to decrease operational costs and cut carbon emissions to meet environmental goals. As outdoor lighting technologies become more efficient and less expensive, more and more owners are investing in lighting upgrades. While the use of lighting controls is also on the rise, there is less standardization around the technologies. Annual Revenue from Outdoor Lighting Controls Is Expected to Reach $1.3 Billion by 2025

Falling LED prices and adoption of intelligent controls are driving growth in outdoor lighting systems

A new report from Navigant Research analyzes the global market for outdoor lighting and controls, providing an overview of market issues, technological developments, regional trends, and forecasts for luminaire and lamp unit shipments, through 2025.

As outdoor lighting technologies become more efficient and less expensive, businesses and governments are investing in upgrades as a way to decrease operational costs and reduce carbon emissions. Many of today’s outdoor systems rely on basic controls such as dimming and automatic shut-offs during nighttime hours, and also take advantage of gains in light-emitting diode (LED) technology, which offers improved efficiency and quality at a lower cost.  According to a new report from Navigant Research, the market for outdoor lighting controls, including motion sensors, photo cells, intelligent controls, and control software, is expected to grow from $492 million in 2016 to $1.3 billion in 2025.

“Recent improvements in outdoor lighting technology have created a fast-growing market for both LED lighting fixtures and lighting controls across all outdoor lighting applications,” says Allison Cross, managing consultant with Navigant Research. “Although a large percentage of the existing outdoor lighting luminaire stock is currently composed of older, less efficient technologies, it is expected that LED luminaires will quickly take over as the predominant outdoor lighting technology over the next 10 years as municipalities and other organizations continue to retrofit exterior lighting.”

According to the report, LED luminaire unit shipments for outdoor lighting systems are expected to experience a compound annual growth rate of 6.3 percent between 2016 and 2025, while all other outdoor lighting technologies will experience a decrease in unit shipments.
