On a global scale, buildings (both residential and commercial) account for 37%-45% of total final energy consumption. Commercial buildings in particular consume a considerable amount of energy related to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, water heating, plug loads, and various other building functions. Countries around the world are taking action to mitigate causes of global climate change. The recent COP21 in Paris resulted in 195 countries signing on to participate in the first legally binding global climate deal.

Increasing the utilization of energy efficiency retrofits is a critical step toward reducing energy demand, increasing energy security, lowering harmful gas emissions, and minimizing demand for new energy production and distribution generation. Building owners and tenants also see significant benefits from energy efficiency in the form of increased property value, improved worker satisfaction, and the availability of green marketing efforts. Improving the energy efficiency of energy-consuming buildings is often a more affordable way to reduce harmful gas emissions while minimizing the need for new energy production. According to Navigant Research, global revenue for energy efficiency commercial building retrofits is expected to grow from $71.4 billion in 2016 to $100.8 billion in 2025.
