Summary

The Asia-Pacific dewatering equipment market stands as the largest and most dynamic globally, its evolution over the past five years defined by an unprecedented convergence of regulatory mandates, infrastructure investment, and industrial expansion. China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD), alongside the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Ministry of Ecology and Environment, jointly issued the Sludge Harmless Treatment and Resource Utilization Implementation Plan, setting a binding target of a 90 percent harmless disposal rate for municipal sludge nationally by 2025, with prefecture-level cities required to achieve 95 percent. This regulatory floor mandated the addition of no less than 20,000 tonnes per day of disposal capacity for sludge at 80 percent moisture content, directly catalysing a compliance-driven procurement cycle for mechanical dewatering equipment. India's Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) followed with a 2025 revision mandating that dewatered municipal sludge achieve moisture content below 70 per cent, a full 15 percentage points stricter than the previous norm, while the National Mission for Clean Ganga's 2026 advisory proposed Key Performance Indicators targeting 20-30 per cent moisture reduction at sewage treatment plants. Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) issued 2025 sludge treatment facility renewal guidelines requiring the systematic renovation of approximately 430 wastewater treatment plants between 2026 and 2030. According to the research report, "Asia-Pacific Dewatering Equipment Market Outlook, 2031," published by Bonafide Research, the Asia-Pacific Dewatering Equipment market is anticipated to grow at 10.12% CAGR from 2026 to 2031. SUEZ has been awarded the sludge dewatering contract for the relocation of the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to caverns by the Hong Kong Drainage Services Department, designing and supplying equipment for what will be Asia's largest cavern-based sewage treatment plant. Alfa Laval has won a contract with Singapore's Public Utilities Board (PUB) to overhaul the Kranji Water Reclamation Plant, delivering innovative treatment technology to enhance sludge dewatering efficiency. In South Korea, ROYAL Precision Industry has established itself as a dominant domestic manufacturer, with its decanter centrifuge systems occupying 70 percent of the Korean sludge treatment market and operating at over 1,000 sites globally. The China General Machinery Industry Association's Separation Machinery Branch, representing 34 large-scale member enterprises, reported total output value of 13.33 billion yuan in 2023, a 5.1 percent year-on-year increase, with sales revenue of 11.8 billion yuan growing 14.6 percent and export value of 520 million yuan growing 18.2 percent. Entry barriers remain high due to varying certification requirements across the region, including China Compulsory Certification (CCC), Indian BIS marks, and Japan's JIS standards, which create duplication costs estimated at 5-10 percent of total procurement budgets for cross-border buyers. The value chain is increasingly integrated, with service providers offering comprehensive solutions from design and installation through to lifecycle maintenance and aftermarket support. Market Drivers • Chinese Sludge Disposal Mandate: The NDRC-MOHURD-MEE joint implementation plan established a binding target of a 90 percent harmless disposal rate for municipal sludge nationally by 2025, with prefecture-level cities required to achieve 95 percent. The plan mandated the addition of no less than 20,000 tonnes per day of harmless disposal capacity for sludge at 80 percent moisture content, creating a compliance-driven procurement cycle across China's municipal treatment network. The State Council's Solid Waste Comprehensive Management Action Plan, issued as Guofa (2025) No. 14, further prohibited approval of new mineral processing projects without self-owned mines and supporting tailings disposal facilities, mandating dry tailings stacking and paste backfill standards that force mining enterprises to retire outdated capacity and procure high-pressure filter presses. This regulatory framework directly propelled demand for mechanical dewatering equipment across both municipal and industrial sectors. • India's CPCB Moisture Standards: India's Central Pollution Control Board 2025 revision to wastewater discharge standards now mandates that dewatered municipal sludge achieve moisture content below 70 per cent, a full 15 percentage points stricter than the previous norm, directly propelling demand for high-efficiency centrifuges and screw presses. The National Mission for Clean Ganga's 2026 advisory, issued under the CPHEEO framework, proposes Key Performance Indicators requiring sludge moisture reduction to 20-30 per cent at sewage treatment plants, with the dewatering facility and associated ancillaries arranged in at least two parallel streams of one working plus one standby configuration. The NITI Aayog's August 2022 report estimated urban wastewater generation at 72,368 million litres per day, of which only 28 per cent is treated, creating a substantial infrastructure gap that government initiatives including Namami Gange, Jal Jeevan Mission, and AMRUT 2.0 are addressing through sustained capital deployment. Market Challenges • Certification Fragmentation and Duplication Costs: The APAC region's dewatering equipment market operates under a fragmented certification landscape, with China Compulsory Certification (CCC), Indian BIS marks, and Japan's JIS standards imposing different technical requirements and approval processes. These varying certification requirements create duplication costs estimated at 5-10 percent of total procurement budgets for cross-border buyers, effectively raising the cost of market entry and expansion for international suppliers. The Korea Environment Corporation's facility inspection regime and the Korea Water and Wastewater Association's standardisation activities add further compliance layers for suppliers targeting the South Korean market, where domestic manufacturers including ROYAL Precision Industry maintain strong incumbency advantages through established relationships with municipal utilities and proven installation references. • Import Dependence and Supply Chain Constraints: The region's heavy reliance on imported high-performance dewatering equipment creates structural vulnerability to global supply chain disruptions. Australia relies on overseas manufacturers for 70-80 percent of wellpoint dewatering equipment and key components, while Indonesia's import dependence for advanced submersible large volume pumps remains significant, with local assembly and component sourcing increasing only modestly. Extended lead times for imported equipment, compounded by global supply chain volatility in electronic controls, hydraulic components, and high-grade stainless steel, remain a persistent bottleneck for project timelines. The Australian market experienced a 16.19 percent decline in dewatering pump imports in 2024 from the previous year, with a compound annual growth rate of negative 2.1 percent from 2020 to 2024, reflecting the cyclical nature of mining-driven demand and the impact of global economic conditions on capital expenditure. Market Trends • High-G Centrifuge Adoption in Industrial Segment: The Asia-Pacific market is experiencing accelerating adoption of high-G decanter centrifuges, particularly within South Korea's industrial segment where end users in the electronics supply chain are systematically replacing belt filter presses with high-G centrifuge technology to achieve 20-30 percent higher cake dryness, directly reducing downstream haulage and incineration costs. This technology shift aligns with the Ministry of Environment's biogasification policy pivot, as higher-solids cake improves anaerobic digestion performance and biogas yield. The Korea Environment Corporation's facility inspection programme and the Korea Water and Wastewater Association's standardisation activities are driving adoption of advanced dewatering technologies that meet the dual objectives of volume reduction and energy recovery, positioning high-G centrifuges as the technology of choice for industrial wastewater treatment in the region's most advanced manufacturing economies. • Screw Press Standardisation and Thermal Hydrolysis Integration: The China Engineering Construction Standardization Association published T/CECS 2092-2025, the Technical Specification for Screw Press Sludge Dewatering Systems, effective May 1, 2026, establishing the first dedicated national association standard for screw press dewatering technology. This standardisation signals the institutionalisation of screw press technology as a mainstream solution for municipal sludge treatment. Simultaneously, the integration of thermal hydrolysis with anaerobic digestion is becoming standard practice across Japan's bioresources hubs, with the B-DASH Project administered by MLIT having supported practical demonstration of phosphorus recovery technologies at Kobe City, Yokohama City, and Tokyo. The MLIT has published guidelines for dewatering-drying systems for sewage sludge fertilizer and fuel conversion, and for low-cost sludge reduction technology using biomass boilers for regional cooperation among small and medium-sized treatment plants, positioning Japan at the forefront of integrated resource recovery from sludge. The continuous generation of wastewater sludge from rapidly urbanizing populations, coupled with increasingly stringent environmental regulations, makes sludge and slurry dewatering the fastest-growing equipment category in Asia-Pacific. China's NDRC-MOHURD-MEE implementation plan set a binding target of a 90 percent harmless disposal rate for municipal sludge nationally by 2025, mandating the addition of no less than 20,000 tonnes per day of disposal capacity for sludge at 80 percent moisture content. India's CPCB 2025 revision mandates that dewatered municipal sludge achieve moisture content below 70 per cent, a full 15 percentage points stricter than the previous norm, directly propelling demand for high-efficiency centrifuges and screw presses. Japan's industrial wastewater treatment sector operates approximately 2,717 sludge dewatering facilities, with MLIT's 2025 renewal guidelines requiring systematic renovation of approximately 430 wastewater treatment plants between 2026 and 2030. South Korea's Ministry of Environment revised its Sewerage Maintenance Basic Plan Establishment Guidelines in April 2025, shifting the national sludge treatment paradigm from drying and incineration toward integrated biogasification, with public organic waste resources targeting 50 per cent conversion to biogas from 2025 onward. The Korea Water Resources Corporation records national sewage sludge generation at 4,221,385 tonnes per year, with Seoul City alone producing an average of 1,770 tonnes of sewage sludge daily from its four major treatment facilities. Indonesia's enhanced regulatory push under Government Regulation No. 22/2021 is compelling industrial facilities to upgrade sludge handling equipment, with compliance-related procurement now representing approximately 25-30 percent of new system purchases. Pumps and wellpoint systems represent the largest technology segment in Asia-Pacific due to their foundational role in construction dewatering, mining operations, and municipal water management across the region's rapidly expanding infrastructure and resource extraction sectors. China's wellpoint dewatering system market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 5-7 percent over the 2026-2035 forecast horizon, driven by rapid urbanization and infrastructure development. India's wellpoint dewatering system market is expanding at 8-12 percent annually, supported by the country's USD 1.4 trillion National Infrastructure Pipeline. The India dewatering pump market was valued at USD 240.36 million in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 326.25 million by 2031, registering a compound annual growth rate of 4.6 percent from 2025 to 2031, with import shipments demonstrating consistent growth of 7.7 percent from 2020 to 2024 and accelerating to 15.1 percent between 2023 and 2024. Indonesia's dewatering pump import market exhibited significant growth of 39.93 percent from 2023 to 2024, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.9 percent for the period 2020-2024, driven by the government's focus on flood mitigation and water resource management, including the construction of new dams. Australia's National Pump & Energy provides a full range of dewatering services to the civil, construction, and mining industries, with an extensive rental fleet of underground submersible pumps and ancillary equipment, while the country relies on overseas manufacturers for 70-80 percent of wellpoint dewatering equipment. South Korea's wellpoint dewatering system market is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate in the mid-to-high single-digit range through 2035, with the industrial segment accounting for an estimated 20-30 percent of high-value equipment demand. Municipal wastewater treatment dominates as the largest end-user segment in Asia-Pacific, driven by the massive scale of urban wastewater generation, stringent sludge disposal regulations, and unprecedented government investment in sanitation infrastructure across the region. China's NDRC-MOHURD-MEE implementation plan set a binding target of a 90 percent harmless disposal rate for municipal sludge nationally by 2025, with prefecture-level cities required to achieve 95 percent, mandating the addition of no less than 20,000 tonnes per day of disposal capacity. India's NITI Aayog estimated urban wastewater generation at 72,368 million litres per day, of which only 28 per cent is treated, creating a massive infrastructure gap that the CPCB's 2025 moisture standards and the NMCG's KPI framework are addressing through compliance-driven procurement. Japan's MLIT issued 2025 sludge treatment facility renewal guidelines requiring systematic renovation of approximately 430 wastewater treatment plants between 2026 and 2030, with the sludge deep dewatering, drying, and incineration equipment market reaching approximately 127 billion yen in 2025. South Korea's Ministry of Environment revised its Sewerage Maintenance Basic Plan Establishment Guidelines in April 2025, selecting eight local governments for its 2024 Integrated Biogasification Project, integrating sewage sludge, food waste, and livestock manure processing into unified facilities. The Korea Water Resources Corporation records national sewage sludge generation at 4,221,385 tonnes per year, with Seoul City alone producing 1,770 tonnes daily. Indonesia's presidential decree requires all wastewater treatment plants with daily capacity exceeding 50,000 tonnes to be equipped with sludge stabilisation facilities by 2027, while Thailand's five-year national sludge action plan sets ambitious processing targets. The China General Machinery Industry Association reports that municipal sludge treatment contributes 62 percent of overall demand for dewatering equipment in the region, cementing municipal wastewater treatment as the dominant end-user segment. China leads the Asia-Pacific dewatering equipment market due to its massive installed base of wastewater treatment infrastructure, the most comprehensive regulatory framework for sludge management, and the largest allocation of government funding for environmental infrastructure renewal. The NDRC-MOHURD-MEE joint implementation plan set a binding target of a 90 percent harmless disposal rate for municipal sludge nationally by 2025, with prefecture-level cities required to achieve 95 percent, mandating the addition of no less than 20,000 tonnes per day of disposal capacity for sludge at 80 percent moisture content. MOHURD's 2025 revision to the GB 18918-2002 Discharge Standard established that dewatered sludge from municipal treatment plants must achieve a moisture content below 80 percent, with many facilities targeting 60 percent to meet advanced disposal requirements. The China Engineering Construction Standardization Association published T/CECS 2092-2025, the first dedicated national association standard for screw press sludge dewatering systems, effective May 1, 2026. The State Council's Solid Waste Comprehensive Management Action Plan, issued as Guofa (2025) No. 14, prohibited approval of new mineral processing projects without self-owned mines and supporting tailings disposal facilities, mandating dry tailings stacking and paste backfill standards. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Ministry of Water Resources jointly released the High-Quality Development Implementation Plan for Water-Saving Equipment (2025-2030), targeting breakthroughs in intelligent membrane separation and digital-intelligent transformation through intelligent sensing and remote monitoring, with the NDRC and Ministry of Commerce 2025 Encouraged Foreign Investment Catalogue specifically listing horizontal screw centrifuge dewatering machines under water pollution prevention equipment manufacturing.
