A user interface is the gateway between the user and an electronic device.  User interfaces have developed alongside such devices using new technologies to provide increasingly simple means of interaction. Since the emergence of the smartphone, touch has been the primary interface technology, developing over time from single-point touch to multi-touch gestures.  Touch will remain the primary user interface in smartphones, tablets, and smart watches, and haptics will also remain widely used.  However, the future of mobile devices lies in multi-modal interfaces.

Over the next several years, voice will grow in importance as an interface technology and will be the major secondary interface for mobile devices.  The hardware and software needed to run aural interface technologies are already well developed, and there is strong momentum toward greater integration of voice integration in devices and apps.  Well-established and emerging use cases, such as virtual digital assistants (VDAs), hands-free use, and always-on interfaces, will drive increasing use of speech recognition technologies.  Visual technologies, such as gesture recognition and eye tracking, are further out on the horizon, as hardware and software improvements are still required and more progress must be made on developing compelling applications for smartphones and tablets.  Other technologies are being developed as alternatives to visual gesture recognition, such as using ultrasound, which may take over as the technology develops.

Voice and Speech Recognition Technologies Will Become a Primary Interface for Many Smartphone Users in the Next Few Years

Voice-based user interface technologies are becoming an increasingly important part of the user experience for smartphones, tablets, and smart watches.  According to a recent report from Tractica, this growth is being driven by a variety of use cases that include not only traditional applications like hands-free calling, but also high-growth areas like virtual digital assistants (VDAs), always-on interfaces, and voiceprint identification of individual speakers.

The market intelligence firm anticipates that these use cases will drive significant growth in attach rates for speech and voice recognition technologies in mobile devices during the next several years.  Tractica forecasts that native speech recognition will grow from 45% of all mobile devices in 2014 to 82% by 2020.  Meanwhile, voice recognition, which identifies individual voiceprints and may be utilized for various biometric identification and authentication purposes, will grow to an attach rate of 36% by 2020, even though virtually no mobile devices have such capability today.

“Aural interface technologies are rapidly becoming an essential part of the user interface for mobile devices,” says principal analyst Peter Cooney.  “They add functionality like voice authentication and also enable new applications, such as virtual digital assistants.”

Cooney adds that the technology needed to run audio interface technologies is largely well developed, with components like microphones and audio processors being advanced enough to enable a range of applications.  Tractica’s analysis indicates that numerous vendors are pursuing this growth opportunity, with at least 24 mobile technology suppliers providing product offerings in the audio interface sector.
