As many have suspected, the home network is becoming less about data-centric activity centers on PCs and printers, and more about piping web-based digital media into the home. As media-related networking behavior becomes more prominent, gateway placement will continue to shift away from the home office and towards primary living spaces (areas where key CE platforms are located).
This report offers detailed insight into the types of consumer electronic devices (stationary, portable, and mobile) that are used by today's broadband households, the rooms within the home in which these devices are located or primarily used, and the Internet connectivity status of each device by room. It is the most concise research-based view of the CE and PC architecture of the broadband home available today.
Summary
The home networking industry is at a crossroads. As the “connected CE” market heats up, replacement sales continue, yet first-time network buyers are dwindling. The reason for this? Of the over 55% of non-networked broadband homes, most simply have no desire to buy one. Lack of understanding of the benefits of home network loom high, which indicates shortcomings in market communication, education, and messaging ? if consumers are unaware of what home networks are and do?and the benefits they provide?the likelihood of first-time purchase remains insignificant.
This report offers insight into home network ownership and use among broadband households; offers a detailed demographic profile of current networked heads-of-household; and discusses purchase proclivities among both network owners and non-owners. It will provide you with a research-based description of the consumers that use or are likely to use home networks.
