This document contains the Executive Summary, Test Methodology, Table of Contents, and List of Figures and Tables (55) for a separately published 54-page report. The report provides detailed information on the video delivery and playback capabilities of seven smartphones – Apple (1), HTC (1), LG (1), and Samsung (4).  In addition to providing a range of video and audio scores (freezes, impairments, A/V synch, observed fps, etc.), the study also looked at the impact of power consumption and network resource utilization as other important performance metrics.

This report was done in collaboration with Spirent Communications and Accuver who provided us with their test equipment to conduct the study.

Leveraging test equipment from Spirent and Accuver, SRG conducted a benchmark study of seven smartphones in a commercial LTE network.  The test results reveal dramatic performance differences in the video player capabilities of the smartphones that we tested.

WE DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING:

  • We analyzed video performance, including video freezes, video impairments, A/V synch and observed fps using a wide range of video resolutions and delivery protocols (HLS, RTSP, and HTTP).
  • The Apple iPhone 6 Plus was the top-performing smartphone that we tested.  We also tested smartphones from HTC, LG and Samsung (4).
  • We observed the the benefits of carrier aggregation (A&T has a soft launch of LTE-A in San Francisco), even when streaming relatively low bit rate video streams.
  • Improvements in  chipsets (baseband + A/P) and device optimization have resulted in double-digit reductions in smartphone power consumption over the last few years).
