Published since 1990 Volume 3 of the Yearbook of World Electronics Data extends our coverage to include several emerging markets, significantly China, Mexico and Turkey. Events in China continue to dominate the global electronics industry. The country is forecsat to accounted for nearly 25.5% of global output in 2008, compared to 3% in 1995. China has been boosted by a growing indigenous industry and an influx of overseas manufacturers looking for substantial cost savings. The growing domestic market is forecast to account for very nearly 17.5% of the global total by 2011, further fuelling overseas investment. The rate of growth of production is slowing from an 19% in 2007 to 9% in 2008 as export demand weakens. The electronic industry in Mexico is made up of more than 700 manufacturing companies, with over 300,000 people employed. The industry is located mainly in the Mexican states of Aguascalientes , Baja Californai , Chihuahua , Coahuila, Estado de Mexico, Jalisco, Nuevo Leon, Queretaro and Tamaulipas. Electronic output has remained buoyant since 2004 with double digit growth in both 2006 and 2007 although production is expected to slow in 2008, the slowdown in the US offsetting stronger domestic demand. Although growth in China is will ease in the second- half of 2008 the country now accounts for 25% of global electronics production. The growing dominance of China reflects the trend for manufacturers to migrate volume manufacturing to lower costs locations. According to the latest survey from Reed Electronics Research (RER) at the end of 2008, 55% of global electronics output will be in low cost locations, up from 33% in 2000 and only 25% in 1995. Despite China ’s position emerging countries such as India , Brazil , Russia and Vietnam are expected to play a greater role on the world stage. The current turmoil in the global financial markets makes the short-term outlook for the global electronics industry uncertain and difficult to predict. In the longer-term, however, the prospects remain good led by strong growth in emerging markets. According to RER the global electronics market is forecast to reach US$1,873 billion by 2011, up from US$1,613 billion in 2007.
