Sustainability, previously known as the “triple bottom line” - the economic, environmental, and social impacts of doing business ? is in transition as a concept and a business culture. In the midst of this shift, the largest companies in the consumer electronics industry are improving or adopting sustainability principles in their new product lifecycles to include a greater focus on more sustainable design, raw materials extraction, manufacturing, distribution, use, and end-of-life management.

Corporate policies, legal requirements, and certification processes are being used to drive economic, environmental and social responsibility down through their supply chains. Smaller companies and other electronic segments like data centers are beginning to follow with an initial focus on energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions. Pike Research anticipates that, in the years ahead, sustainable practices will have a greater and greater impact on all electronics categories.

This Pike Research report provides a comprehensive examination of sustainability trends in electronics design and manufacturing across major industry categories including computers, peripherals, and office equipment; networks, enterprise computing, and servers; telecommunications and broadcasters; semiconductors and components; home entertainment; and electronics wholesalers. The study assesses and ranks the sustainability initiatives of major electronics manufacturers, and includes forecasts of the impact of sustainable practices, both in terms of unit shipments and revenue, through 2015.

Key questions addressed:

  • What is the history and context of sustainability efforts in corporations within the electronics sector?
  • What is the quality, completeness and transparency of CSR reports, and how do they rank compared to each other?
  • What are the attributes of sustainability throughout the product lifecycles for each of the 37 companies evaluated?
  • What is the percent of units sold and revenue generated with sustainable attributes or benefits in four major segments within the electronics sector, and what will these impacts be through 2015?

Who needs this report?

  • Computer, peripherals, and office equipment manufacturers
  • Networks, enterprise computing, and server vendors
  • Telecommunications and broadcasting equipment manufacturers and service providers
  • Semiconductor and component companies
  • Corporate social responsibility consultants
  • Government agencies
  • Nonprofit organizations
