Smart meters could be labeled as the original smart grid device. More than a decade after communicating electric meters were deployed, the market for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI, or smart meters) remains strong and growing. Since the release of Navigant Research’s Global AMI Tracker in 4Q 2016, the North American market has seen a handful of new project announcements (Clay Electric, Chugach Electric Association, and City of Pasadena) and some notable project updates (Hawaiian Electric). Outside of the United States, Canada is seeing a lull in project activity, as most of the country’s major utilities have reached near full penetration of their meter fleets.

In Europe, smart electric meter activity remains high as multiple national rollouts continue in varying stages of deployment. Notably, new legislation has been enacted in Germany that will finally kick-start the country’s partial smart meter rollout. The Asia Pacific market remains fragmented, though high volume deployments continue across China and Japan as these countries’ utilities continue their push toward near nationwide coverage. In Latin America, only a select few countries are pursuing meaningful deployments. The Middle East & Africa has also been slow to adopt AMI, but this is changing somewhat in the Middle East since countries like Kuwait, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates have announced large-scale projects.

This Navigant Research report provides an analysis of global utility smart meter projects. It tracks data related to global customer endpoints, meter manufacturers, AMI communications vendors, systems integrators, and meter data management (MDM) vendors. The report also includes an examination of the technologies, timeframes, and vendor selections for AMI deployments around the world, along with vendor selection share analysis for North America.

Key Questions Addressed:
  • What are the key smart meter projects around the world?
  • Which utilities are actively engaged in smart meter deployments on a worldwide basis?
  • Which technologies have various utilities selected for their deployment projects?
  • What types of smart meter-related vendors are working with specific utilities?
  • What are the vendor selection shares of these companies in North America?

China Continued to Lead the Global Smart Electric Meter Market through 3Q 2016 with More than 348 Million Smart Meter Installations

In the coming decade, smart meter replacements and upgrades will begin to present significant revenue stream opportunities for product vendors and systems integrators, report finds

December 20, 2016 – Boulder, CO – A new report from Navigant Research tracks global utility smart meter projects, providing data on global customer endpoints, meter manufacturers, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) communications vendors, systems integrators, and meter data management (MDM) vendors.

More than a decade after the earliest models of communicating electric meters were deployed, the market for AMI (or smart meters) remains strong and growing. Since the release of Navigant Research’s Global AMI Tracker in 2Q 2016, the North American market has seen a handful of new project announcements (Entergy, National Grid, and Pacific Power) and some notable project updates (Ameren Illinois), while markets in Europe and Asia Pacific experience continued uptake.  According to a new report from Navigant Research, China remains the leading global smart electric meter market through 3Q 2016, with more than 348 million smart meters installed, accounting for 67.1 percent of tracked global installations.

“The global smart meter market and its underlying technologies have evolved rapidly since the technology’s inception,” says Michael Kelly, research associate with Navigant Research. “Relatively developed markets include North America, Western Europe, and areas of Asia Pacific, all of which remain strong and growing with significant market opportunities remaining.”

In the coming decade, the second-generation smart meter market (replacements and upgrades) within these highly penetrated regions will begin to present significant revenue stream opportunities for product vendors and systems integrators, according to the report. Less saturated markets, including Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa, still face significant barriers to entry, but large volume project activity is forecasted across all of these areas.

The report, Global AMI Tracker 4Q16, provides an analysis of global utility smart meter projects.
