Navigant Research’s Microgrid Deployment Tracker 4Q17 is the 13th edition of its microgrid database that is updated semiannually. This edition of the Tracker shows remote projects leading all microgrid segments in terms of both microgrid capacity and number of projects. The commercial and industrial (C&I) segment made a huge push in this update, adding over 2 GW of microgrid capacity. Most of this new capacity is due to the addition of the 2,200 MW Saudi Aramco gas-oil separation plant from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL).

As of 4Q 2017, Navigant Research has identified 1,869 project entries, representing 20,766.2 MW of operating, under development, and proposed microgrid capacity and 60 new projects. New in this update is the classification of projects that are on hold. There are 32 such projects identified in the Tracker, and this capacity was not counted toward any capacity totals. These projects will remain in the database in case they become operational. Solar PV capacity continued showing strong growth in this update, adding almost 323 MW of capacity. Diesel capacity remains the leading specific generation technology in terms of total capacity, though its lead continues to shrink. Asia Pacific remains ahead of North America for total overall capacity; however, North America still leads in terms of number of projects.

This Navigant Research report tracks data on known grid-tied and remote microgrid projects in the proposal, planning, and deployed stages in six geographies. The report covers seven microgrid segments: C&I, community, utility distribution, institutional/campus, military, remote, and direct current (DC) systems. Information is provided on capacity and project numbers by distributed generation type, operational and under development/proposed status, top 10 countries, and top 10 US states. The Tracker also segments projects currently known to be on hold, as well as operational, under development, and proposed.

Navigant Research Identifies 1,842 Microgrid Projects, Representing Nearly 20 GW of Capacity

2Q 2017 update of Microgrid Deployment Tracker reveals strong growth in the commercial and industrial sector

June 27, 2017

A new report from Navigant Research presents data on known grid-tied and remote microgrid projects in the proposal, planning, and deployed stages across six geographies and seven microgrid segments.

Navigant Research’s latest edition of its Microgrid Deployment Tracker shows remote projects leading all microgrid segments in terms of capacity and number of projects. In addition, it reflects strong capacity increases in the commercial and industrial (C&I) segment, which added more than 2 GW.  According to a new report from Navigant Research, as of 2Q 2017, Navigant Research has identified 1,842 microgrid project entries, including 173 new projects, representing 19,279.4 MW of capacity for projects that are operating, under development, and proposed.

“Within the next decade, microgrids serving C&I applications are expected to become the fastest-growing segment as more companies seek stable power solutions beyond what the grid can provide,” says Adam Wilson, research analyst with Navigant Research. “Market share in this segment increased from 6 percent to 16 percent from the 4Q 2016 Tracker, thanks to an additional 2.1 GW of capacity, largely from a portfolio of natural gas microgrids across India and China.”

According to the report, diesel capacity remains the leading generation technology in terms of total capacity, though its lead continues to shrink as solar capacity gains ground. In terms of overall capacity, Asia Pacific jumped ahead of North America. And while North America remains No. 1 in operational microgrid capacity, Asia Pacific leads the market for capacity under development as well as proposed capacity.

The report, Microgrid Deployment Tracker 2Q17, tracks data on known grid-tied and remote microgrid projects in the proposal, planning, and deployed stages in six geographies. The report covers seven microgrid segments: commercial and industrial, community, utility distribution, institutional/campus, military, remote, and direct current (DC) systems. Specific information is provided on the capacity and project numbers by distributed generation type, operational and under development/proposed capacity, top 10 countries, and top 10 microgrid companies. The Tracker also segments projects currently known to be on hold.

Worldwide, Nearly 1,700 Microgrid Projects are Proposed, Under Development, or Operating

Energy storage and solar PV continue be driving forces in the microgrid industry

January 5, 2017

A new report from Navigant Research tracks data on known grid-tied and remote microgrid projects in the proposal, planning, and deployed stages across six geographies, with details on capacity, project numbers, and rankings.

The latest edition of Navigant Research’s Microgrid Deployment Tracker shows North America strengthening its claim as the leading region in global operational microgrid capacity with a 54 percent market share. North America and Asia Pacific account for 95 percent of the new project capacity, and the United States leads all countries in terms of both capacity and total number of projects. According to a new report from Navigant Research, as of 4Q 2016, Navigant Research has identified 1,681 project entries, representing 16,553 megawatts (MW) of operating, under development, and proposed microgrid capacity and 126 new projects.

“The combination of solar photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage in microgrids isn’t just a fad—these two renewable technologies have been a driving force in the microgrid industry for years and their role continues to expand,” says Adam Wilson, research associate with Navigant Research. “With solar PV reaching grid parity with other traditional generation technologies, we see it move beyond remote systems, and the combination of energy storage and solar PV is becoming a more frequent combination across all segments and regions.”

Three of the most noteworthy additions to this edition of the Tracker include the 100 MW energy storage project in Andhra Pradesh India; 83 MW of solar PV and energy storage in Imperial Valley, California; and an 80 MW remote project in Newcastle Australia that includes diesel as well as solar PV and energy storage. According to the report, energy storage capacity increased by 238 MW in this update and solar PV capacity increased 203 MW, compared to 108 MW of diesel.

The report, Microgrid Deployment Tracker 4Q16, tracks data on known grid-tied and remote microgrid projects in the proposal, planning, and deployed stages in six geographies. The report covers seven microgrid segments: commercial and industrial, community, utility distribution, institutional/campus, military, remote, and direct current (DC) systems. Specific information is provided on the capacity and project numbers by distributed generation type, operational and under development/proposed capacity, top 10 countries, and top 10 US states. This Tracker also segments projects currently known to be on hold.
