All eyes are on the steady march forward of offshore wind energy. Navigant Research’s analysis indicates the global wind industry installed an estimated 3.3 GW of new offshore capacity annually in 2017, bringing the cumulative total to almost 17 GW. While the onshore wind market is larger in terms of total megawatt plant capacity added annually, offshore wind is growing more quickly. It is forecast to grow at an 11.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2017 and 2022, compared to single-digit growth rates for onshore wind.

Offshore wind is becoming more cost-effective with each competitive tender in Europe. Industry-leading countries such as the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, and Belgium are well into a transition phase to market-oriented policies. Reductions in offshore wind power purchase agreements and other price mechanisms are partly being enabled by massive wind turbines with blade rotor diameters between 150 and 180+ meters (492-590 feet). Technology improvements and cost reduction strategies are being exported globally as offshore wind is deployed around the world. Offshore wind is an abundant clean energy solution for many coastal load centers where a greater proportion of population and energy demand is located. Two floating offshore wind farms were installed in 2017, showing that a cost breakthrough with floating foundations could open new areas for offshore wind deployment.

Offshore Wind Capacity Reached Nearly 12 GW by the End of 2015

A recent report from Navigant Research examines the major offshore wind markets, with wind power capacity forecasts and global and country-level analyses, through 2020.

The offshore wind market has increasingly improved in select countries where development ambitions are matched with supportive policy. Europe’s industry-leading countries are well into a transition phase to more market-oriented policies that track and fluctuate alongside broader market rates.  According to a recent report from Navigant Research, offshore wind capacity reached nearly 12 GW by the end of 2015.

“Most of the operational capacity in leading countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom have been enabled by renewable energy generation mandates,” says Jesse Broehl, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “From a policy perspective, Europe is showing the way in the evolution of how offshore wind projects are supported.”

The European offshore wind market dynamics are informing how the rest of the world will likely move from an incentives perspective. According to the report, recent project tenders, construction activity, turbine orders, and financing arrangements are showing that these mechanisms are able to lower the cost of wind energy to the consumer and taxpayer while still enabling an offshore wind market to build at substantial capacity.

2015 Marked Record Year for the Offshore Wind Energy Market

Over 65 percent of offshore wind capacity was installed in Germany in 2015

A new report from Navigant Research examines the major offshore wind markets, with wind power capacity forecasts and global and country-level analyses, through 2020.

The demand for clean and diversified energy sources from an increasing number of governments continues to drive interest in offshore wind energy production. Preliminary confirmed project commissioning in all global markets shows that offshore wind reached nearly 12 GW of cumulative capacity by the end of 2015.  According to a new report from Navigant Research, 2015 represented a record year for the offshore wind energy market, with more than 3.7 GW that came online, up from just under one GW installed in 2014.

“The market is maturing, with leading countries in Europe now well into a transition phase to more market-oriented policies that track and fluctuate alongside broader market rates and also include competitive bidding to lower project costs,” says Jesse Broehl, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “By 2020, cumulative total offshore wind capacity is expected to surpass 32 GW.”

More than 65 percent of the capacity installed in 2015 was in Germany, according to a report, where a large number of wind turbines installed in 2014 became fully energized and grid-connected. Other key markets, such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and China, contributed capacity as well.
