Utilities are ramping up their investments in grid connectivity and networking for the purpose of improved operating economics, energy efficiency, and grid reliability. But there is also growing recognition that the network that supports smart grid applications like advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), distribution automation (DA), and/or substation automation (SA) could become the backbone for far more than these version 1.0 smart grid applications.

A new report from Navigant Research examines the state of utility communications network deployments and service consumption worldwide, offering an analysis of 12 prevalent communications technologies used in smart grid and smart city applications, in addition to market forecasts for communications infrastructure and services, through 2025.

Utilities are ramping up their investments in grid connectivity and networking for the purpose of improved operating economics, energy efficiency, and grid reliability. But there is also growing recognition that a network that supports smart grid applications like advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), distribution automation (DA), and/or substation automation (SA) could become the backbone for far more.  According to a new report from Navigant Research, the cumulative market for utility networking gear and communications services is expected to exceed $75 billion during the next decade.

“Many electric utilities today are at a critical juncture in terms of determining their long-term connectivity needs and networking technology choices,” says Richelle Elberg, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “The number of ways in which a utility may leverage connectivity across its territory is exploding as traditional smart grid applications like AMI and DA/SA become the norm, and as emerging applications—ranging from new IT systems and analytics, solar integration, electric vehicle charging networks, and smart city applications—all present opportunities for utilities to benefit from this increasingly networked environment.”
