Alternating current (AC) power is nearly ubiquitous, as conventional power grids supply AC power to commercial buildings and other users. However, certain categories of devices require direct current (DC) power. This conversion process results in an incremental loss of power due to inherent inefficiencies. When added together across numerous devices, the total power loss becomes more substantial.

Deployed at the building level, DC power distribution can reduce the number of required conversions, thereby increasing overall building energy efficiency. DC power systems rely on centralized, higher efficiency devices to convert AC to DC power and then distribute low- to mid-voltage DC power to various loads, including lighting, sensors, door locks, plug-in devices, actuators, controls, and more. The advantages of DC power systems become clear when considering the integration of renewable energy generation and energy storage systems.
