Public demonstrations by security researchers highlight potential dangers of cyber security vulnerabilities in transportation

A new report from Navigant Research explores the automotive cyber security landscape, with global market forecasts of light duty vehicles (LDVs), built-in teleTematics installations, vehicles capable of over-the-air (OTA) updates, and installations of malware prevention, through 2025.

With well-publicized cyber-attacks in other industries, in addition to revelations about government surveillance and the ongoing threat of terrorism, it has become increasingly important to design transportation systems and vehicles from the ground up with cyber security in mind. As the personal mobility ecosystem is expected to transform over the next several decades with the deployment of new automation and communications technologies, engineers seek to address potential cyber security issues before they become a problem.  According to a new report from Navigant Researc, by the end of 2025, nearly half of all global LDV sales are expected to include telematics capabilities that will enable OTA software updates to address cyber security, functionality, and regulatory compliance issues.

“One motto of computer security experts is that convenience is the enemy of security—as in the easier it is to access and use a computing system, the higher the risk that malicious actors will be able penetrate and exploit that same system,” says Sam Abuelsamid, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “As modern vehicles become increasingly connected and automated, the potential for a catastrophic cyber-attack increases dramatically.”

Recent public demonstrations by security researchers have highlighted the potential dangers of cyber security vulnerabilities and have incented the transportation industry to act more aggressively to minimize potential attack vectors and impacts, according to the report. While it is virtually impossible to guarantee absolute security in a complex, connected electronic system, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers, and other stakeholders are working aggressively to improve cyber resilience.
