A new Leaderboard report from Navigant Research examines the strategy and execution of 15 leading grid edge connectivity providers, providing industry participants with an objective assessment of these companies’ relative strengths and weaknesses.
Increasingly, utilities worldwide are deploying field area networks (FANs), aiming to support not only advanced metering infrastructure (AMI, or smart metering), but also a variety of distribution grid automation applications. Grid edge connectivity via a FAN allows both new and legacy devices to be remotely controlled, enabling a self-healing grid, minimizing outages, and improving utility performance metrics and customer satisfaction. According to a new Leaderboard report from Navigant Research, in terms of strategy and execution, Itron and Silver Spring Networks are the leading grid edge connectivity providers.
“Utility connectivity needs are expanding at a breathtaking pace,” says Richelle Elberg, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “While many of the vendors ranked in this report were established to serve the needs of smart metering projects, today, utilities are looking for more robust, multi-function FANs.”
The utility of the future will rely heavily upon networking technology to enable a vast array of operational, efficiency, maintenance, and customer engagement applications, according to the report. As such, leading industry players have expanded their technology offerings and product portfolios in order to meet these various needs with interoperable solutions, and they have also achieved significant wins in the marketplace over the past year.
The report, Navigant Research Leaderboard Report: Utility Field Area Networking, examines the strategy and execution of 10 leading utility FAN providers. These grid edge connectivity providers are rated on 12 criteria: vision; go-to market strategy; partners; production strategy, technology; geographic reach; sales, marketing, and distribution; product performance; product quality and reliability; product portfolio; pricing; and staying power. Using Navigant Research’s proprietary Leaderboard methodology, vendors are profiled, rated, and ranked with the goal of providing an objective assessment of their relative strengths and weaknesses in the global utility FAN market.
