Utilities worldwide are deploying field area networks (FANs) at an accelerating pace. They aim to use these networks to support not only advanced metering infrastructure (AMI, or smart metering), but also a variety of distribution grid automation applications. Grid edge connectivity via a FAN allows both new and legacy devices to be remotely controlled, enabling a self-healing grid, minimizing outages, and improving utility performance metrics and customer satisfaction.

A FAN can also enable distribution-level sensors that keep operations personnel and managers apprised of voltage levels and asset health. Itron and Silver Spring Networks Rank as Leading Grid Edge Connectivity Providers in Navigant Research Assessment

Leading industry players have expanded their technology offerings and product portfolios to provide utilities with interoperable solutions

A new Leaderboard report from Navigant Research examines the strategy and execution of 15 leading grid edge connectivity providers, providing industry participants with an objective assessment of these companies’ relative strengths and weaknesses.

Increasingly, utilities worldwide are deploying field area networks (FANs), aiming to support not only advanced metering infrastructure (AMI, or smart metering), but also a variety of distribution grid automation applications. Grid edge connectivity via a FAN allows both new and legacy devices to be remotely controlled, enabling a self-healing grid, minimizing outages, and improving utility performance metrics and customer satisfaction.  According to a new Leaderboard report from Navigant Research, in terms of strategy and execution, Itron and Silver Spring Networks are the leading grid edge connectivity providers.

“Utility connectivity needs are expanding at a breathtaking pace,” says Richelle Elberg, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “While many of the vendors ranked in this report were established to serve the needs of smart metering projects, today, utilities are looking for more robust, multi-function FANs.”

The utility of the future will rely heavily upon networking technology to enable a vast array of operational, efficiency, maintenance, and customer engagement applications, according to the report.
