概要
Despite taking some battering in this past year, deep packet inspection (DPI) has pulled through and is currently receiving a makeover and rebranding. DPI vendors are emphasizing their ability to improve subscriber experience, enhance content delivery systems, and build new revenue streams for operators and service providers.
DPI technology is still in the hype phase, where vendors must prove that their equipment does what is promised. However, many reports have pointed out the inefficiency or inaccuracy of systems. DPI vendors are facing an environment in which they will not simply be stopping a percentage of traffic passing through a network, but enabling appropriate service delivery for the traffic of many millions of subscribers. Operators are cautious, and will not want to risk mass investment without confidence in DPI platforms.
Another technology, deep packet capture (DPC), complements DPI. While DPI is designed to enable service providers to see and act in real time, DPC solutions are designed to capture all the data passing through a network and store it for more detailed analysis. By storing the actual data over a period of time and at multiple points in the network, DPC enables end-to-end capacity planning, end-to-end QOS analysis, and troubleshooting based on the behavior of applications and network elements over a period of time. This is a diagnostic aid, enabling a network manager to take more informed action.
As the market continues to evolve, DPI and DPC are expected to become more closely linked. Due to the natural synergy between the technologies, operators are likely to want to combine the services to avoid deploying separate systems. Despite regulatory and technology hiccups in the coming years, DPI is expected to underpin many features of next-generation networks.
This report takes a close look at the ways in which leading DPI vendors have evolved their products and market positioning over the past 12 months. It reviews the different types of services and applications that are enabled by the technology, and it provides forecasts for the value of the DPI market. This report also looks at the emerging relationship between DPI and DPC, and provides 22 company and technology profiles.
