This report examines the VDSL2 market, including the most significant factors telcos must consider when choosing to deploy VDSL2 and whether the fiscal and broadband stimulus measures will make a difference in the market. The report also profiles 15 major vendors of VDSL2 equipment, comparing their portfolios and competitive positioning.

概要

Very High Speed DSL 2 (VDSL2) is the highest-speed mainstream access technology that can be deployed by telcos using existing copper pairs. Its ability to deliver downstream data rates of up to 100 Mbit/s over short distances makes it suitable for the delivery of triple-play services; it can support fast upstream; and it is also touted by vendors as a mobile network backhaul technology.

Vendors report continuing interest in VDSL2 from around the world, in particular from former incumbent operators in Europe and from midsize and large operators in North America: One company that supplies smaller telcos in the U.S. told Light Reading there is no doubt that VDSL2 is gaining traction. However, in some Asian countries, where the first VDSL technology was deployed, the speeds offered by VDSL2 might now be too slow. But overall, vendors interviewed for this report believe that VDSL2 will have a significant role to play in broadband access for some time to come.

The VDSL2 standard is complex, involving several configuration profiles. However, as one equipment vendor points out, standardization of VDSL2 is almost complete: It is very close to becoming standardized, and equipment with these features is already being deployed. However, one issue is the reliance of equipment vendors on their chipset suppliers to produce silicon with the necessary features.

The supply side of the market for VDSL2 equipment is composed of large multi-technology network equipment providers, some midsize vendors, and smaller, more specialized players. Many vendors offer optical access equipment as well as a DSL kit and – reflecting the way operators view VDSL2 – see VDSL2 products as a natural extension of their optical access lines.

Operators around the world are rolling out VDSL2, and vendors expect further deployments, especially in markets where loop lengths are relatively short, or where there are high concentrations of multi-dwelling units – VDSL2 remains a very strong technology choice for in-building connection in FTTB deployments in apartment complexes.

Can VDSL2 Turn Copper Into Stimulus Package Gold? looks at the status of the VDSL2 market, examining the factors telcos consider when choosing to deploy VDSL2 in their network, and whether the fiscal and broadband stimulus measures will make a difference in the market. It reviews the most significant issues facing the VDSL2 community and the work that is being done to address them. The report also identifies and profiles 15 major vendors of VDSL2 equipment, and compares their portfolios and positioning.

Sample research data from the report is shown in the excerpts below:
  • The high cost of laying fiber and the revenues to gain from selling services delivered over fast broadband networks are two high-level drivers of investment in high-speed DSL technologies. But these two basic factors mask an extremely complex, multi-criteria decision for any operator planning its access network upgrades or new builds. The following excerpt summarizes the drivers and choices that operators face in deciding where and whether to adopt VDSL2 as part of their access network upgrade plans.
