The cable industry is starting to get serious about going green. Major multiple system operators (MSOs) and suppliers are exploring environmentally friendly technologies and operational processes to collectively reduce cable's carbon footprint.

The industry is moving toward using more energy efficient set-top boxes and other customer equipment. Fleet managers are acquiring more fuel efficient cable vehicles and adding global positioning system (GPS) devices that reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Alternative energy sources, such as solar and wind, are making their way into cable facilities. Headend equipment and other gear is getting smaller and more efficient. Fiber architecture is showing the added promise of reducing powering needs in cable plant. Suppliers are embracing policies to promote recycling and end the usage of hazardous materials in electronic gear.

Cable has a growing list of attractive technology and operational options to support green initiatives. But the industry has only begun scratching the surface in terms of embracing and implementing them. Initial efforts by MSOs, suppliers, and organizations, such as SCTE, mark an important first step, but green technology must become a higher priority so that it is woven into the daily fabric of cable technology and operations.

MSOs also could do much more to help their residential and business customers go green. Some MSOs offer telecommuting services, but they are not adequately promoted as a means for cities to reduce pollution, reduce traffic congestion, and reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Cable operators continue to send out millions of bills each month when they could offer paperless billing options online or even though interactive TV applications. Cable operators also have unique relationships with cable networks that could be utilized to provide programming, events, or public affairs in support of green initiatives.

The coming year will see a continuation of cable's green efforts. Once more companies prove that "going green means saving green" (as in cash), environmentally friendly technologies and practices will become a regular part of cable's daily routine and the industry will play a larger part in supporting this ecological imperative.

Going Green: Can Cable Reduce Its Carbon Footprint? examines cable's progress with green technologies and the steps cable can take to be environmentally friendly and reap cost savings at the same time. It includes profiles of 10 suppliers that exhibited in a Green Pavilion at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Denver in October 2009 to showcase ways for cable systems to save energy, promote efficiency, and support sustainability – all while saving significant money.

Sample research data from the report is shown in the excerpts below:

  • The following presents some principal areas in which cable is implementing and benefiting from green technologies and operations, including alternative energy, fiber architecture, energy efficient equipment, and fuel reduction. In addition to developing green solutions for their cable company customers, many technology suppliers are committed to eco-friendly practices in their own business operations, manufacturing, shipping, and other activities. Suppliers increasingly are committing to many U.S. or global policy initiatives. The following excerpt provides a summary of key green solutions of which cable can take advantage.
  • Companies profiled in this report include: Alpha Technologies Group Inc.; Aurora Networks Inc.; Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO); CommScope Inc. (NYSE: CTV); Multilink Inc.; Oldcastle Precast Communications, a part of Oldcastle Precast Inc.; Safecom; SageQuest LLC; SeaChange International Inc. (Nasdaq: SEAC); and Trimble Navigation Ltd. (Nasdaq: TRMB).
