With only 2% of the worldwide pay TV subscriber base cutting the cord by 2015, the significant impact on subscriber numbers anticipated in some quarters seems to be somewhat exaggerated.
Summary
The second half of 2010 was dominated by concern over whether broadband users are ‘cutting the cord’ i.e. cancelling their pay TV subscriptions in favor of over-the-top (OTT) video alternatives. Informa's numbers show this to have been a relatively minor phenomenon in 2010, running at well under 1% of the pay TV total. But OTT services will continue to improve and become increasingly attractive. Connected TVs and settops will facilitate easier access to these services and Informa’s forecasts therefore anticipate the number of cord-cutters growing to around 2% of the total pay TV subscriber base in 2015.
