In-Stat’s Worldwide 3G/4G Portable and Computing Connected Device Database provides unit shipment forecasts for select consumer electronic (CE) devices that are connected to the Internet via a cellular network. This type of connectivity is typical for smartphones, laptops, and other mobile Internet devices. But cellular network providers are turning to non-traditional CE devices to connect to their networks in an effort to generate additional revenue.
This report provides worldwide and regional forecasts of non-traditional cellular-connected CE devices, specifically e-readers, personal navigation devices, and digital photo frames. This year’s update includes tablets, as well. This research also breaks out these forecasts by flavors of 3G technology, as well as 4G technologies, like LTE and WiMAX. While these markets are still emerging, there is an opportunity to consider. 78% of Tablets Shipped Will Have a 3G/4G Modem in 2015
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 18, 2011 - Consumers of portable and computing devices require constant connectivity in order to access the Internet, engage in social networking, and share multimedia content. In fact, this consistent connected experience is imperative in today’s digital lifestyle. New In-Stat research suggests that this trend represents an opportunity for mobile operators to move beyond the maturing handset market and into connecting emerging wireless device markets, like e-readers and tablets. By 2015 for example, tablets will have the highest 3G/4G attach rate among all cellular-enabled portable and computing devices with 78% of tablets shipping with a 3G/4G modem, according to In-Stat (www.in-stat.com).
“The emerging tablet market represents one of the strongest opportunities for embedded 3G/4G technology,” says Stephanie Ethier, Senior Analyst. “Cellular connectivity will also continue to find its way into e-readers, as well. By 2015, 65% of e-readers worldwide will ship with an embedded 3G/4G modem.”
In-Stat’s latest research covers the market for non-traditional cellular-connected devices, and includes forecasts for tablets, e-readers, portable navigation devices (PNDs), and digital photo frames.
