この調査レポートは、米国の波長技術によるイーサネット市場を調査しています。

Ethernet over wavelength refers to public dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) services using dedicated wavelengths to transmit Ethernet frames over Ethernet interfaces. Ethernet over DWDM represents the confluence of two fast-growing technologies, outgrowing and displacing legacy Sonet as lower-cost transmission and data protocol technologies, respectively.

Demand for bandwidth continues to escalate without any slowing in sight. This explosion is being fueled by the progressive networking of the economy and society, incorporating the Internet, ongoing proliferation of ever more bandwidth-intensive visual media, smartphones, social networking, data storage, cloud computing and supercomputing, among other drivers. The combination of Ethernet and wavelength technologies can respond to this more flexibly and at lower cost than available alternatives.

Ethernet is the world's primary inter-machine protocol, long deployed within organizational LANs and a public network service since the 1990s. It is now probably the preferred interface for most new connections worldwide, especially at high-bandwidth levels. DWDM, meanwhile, radically multiplies the transmission capacity of individual strands of optical fiber. The technology creates multiple signals on individual fibers using different frequencies, facilitating a huge expansion of transmission capacity for bi-directional communication over fiber.

Wavelengths have become the predominant transmission technology for the delivery of high-bandwidth Ethernet, and Ethernet is becoming the predominant interface for wavelengths. In June 2010, eight years after standards for 10Gbit/s Ethernet (10GE), the current high-bandwidth Ethernet norm, were adopted, new standards for 40GE and 100GE were ratified by an IEEE panel.

The U.S. Ethernet Over Wavelength Market, 2011-2015 analyzes and projects the growth of this crucial and rapidly growing service combination over the five-year forecast period. The report provides detailed market forecasts, analyzed specifically by customer segments that purchase Ethernet over wavelength, bandwidth levels and geographic domains. The report also profiles 12 service providers that offer Ethernet over wavelength services in some form.

For this report, Heavy Reading conducted in-depth interviews with senior executives and marketing and network professionals from 13 companies, including 12 that sell Ethernet services at gigabit-plus levels on dedicated wavelengths, often speaking with two, three or more expert informants per company. The companies interviewed encompassed traditional carriers, CLECs, international carriers and infrastructure providers.

The report explores these service providers' Ethernet over wavelength services in detail. The excerpt below shows the SLA guarantees for Verizon's Optical Wave Service, a point-to-point wavelength service using Verizon's shared ROADM infrastructure. The standard SLA guarantees three-nines availability for unprotected circuits and 99.998 percent for protected.

The excerpt below shows that demand for Ethernet over wavelength continues to diversify. Though wavelengths were overwhelmingly a carrier- and Web-based market several years ago, the retail enterprise sector – with the long-term largest potential – is projected to lead growth as the market for Ethernet over wavelength "democratizes" out to many more customers of different kinds. This growth will be led in the near term by the financial vertical, with media, healthcare and education as significant contributors.

Report Scope and Structure

The U.S. Ethernet Over Wavelength Market, 2011-2015 is structured as follows:

Section I is an introduction to the report, with complete report key findings.

Section II provides background and history on Ethernet and wavelength services, respectively, and their combination.

Section III discusses Ethernet over wavelength applications, covering the explosion in bandwidth demand and buyer groups, including carrier, Web-based and "retail" enterprise buyers.

Section IV discusses current and emerging issues in the U.S. Ethernet over wavelength market, including pricing, the shift toward ever-higher bandwidth levels, issues of differentiation and "make vs. buy" tradeoffs with dark fiber.

Section V provides detailed profiles of 12 leading service providers that offer Ethernet over wavelength services.

Section VI provides Heavy Reading's revenue forecast and segment breakdown for the U.S. Ethernet over wavelength market though 2015.
