Business intelligence (BI) systems, which turn vast quantities of data into graphs and charts for analysis, have been around for a while, and their use throughout the enterprise for everything from corporate financials to sales to marketing has proven powerful.

But as workers increasingly move outside the boundaries of traditional office space and away from the confines of desktops and laptops, savvy BI providers have sought ways to make their data more mobile.

The need for mobile BI is clear. Studies indicate that enterprises using mobile BI make critical management decisions in one-sixth the time of companies that don't use the technology, or about 26 hours compared with 165 hours. The ability to improve employee productivity with a relatively inexpensive investment using technology that employees already understand and are familiar with is a strong driver for both individuals and enterprises to implement mobile BI initiatives.

Studies now show that more than 25 percent of enterprises now have a mobile BI application or dashboard in place. Another 33 percent of enterprises are planning to implement some type of mobile BI by the end of 2012.

As enterprises recognize the benefits of mobile BI – operational efficiency, real-time analytics and customer responsiveness – the industry will continue to grow and develop, and new applications and devices will be created to make it more applicable in the enterprise.

The volume and variety of data continues to increase exponentially, and employees want to tap that asset for their decision making. The inability to access real-time information as data expands inhibits the mobile worker from achieving maximum productivity.

End-user groups must have access to real-time data, no matter their location or mobile device, to enable them to improve individual, as well as organizational performance. Delivery of the right data at the right time can significantly improve productivity.

Mobile Business Intelligence Gains Ground On New Devices examines the mobile BI market, including expected trends in the industry over the next 24 months. It provides analysis about which enterprise verticals will spend the most on mobile BI over the coming months; employees within the enterprise that most commonly use mobile BI; and the issues that challenge the industry. It also includes a comparative analysis of solutions available in the market and examines its geographic landscape. Additionally, the report examines trends that are likely to occur in the industry over the next 18 months
.

Sample research data from the report is shown in the excerpts below:

  • As enterprises determine how mobile BI fits into their business agenda, the best results will come from a coordinated effort that reflects broader goals. The following excerpt illustrates the business verticals that will have the most initial success with mobile BI over the next 18 to 24 months, primarily because their business models already are dependent upon the need for real-time data and analytics information throughout all levels of the organizational infrastructure.
