Studies show that about 94 percent of doctors in the U.S. use smartphones, with 71 percent indicating that the smartphone is essential to their practice. The bigger story, though, is that the healthcare ecosystem as a whole – hospitals, clinics, doctors, nurses, insurance providers, equipment manufacturers, patients and others – is increasingly turning to communications devices to improve patient outcomes, reduce costs and increase employee productivity.

For service providers, the healthcare vertical presents a unique opportunity. On the one hand, all members of the healthcare ecosystem are clamoring for the ability to collaborate and communicate about healthcare as simply, quickly and cost-effectively as possible. On the other hand, there is the reality that building out the bandwidth to support the demands in the healthcare sector is not cheap, nor does it provide for quick return on investment (ROI), because so many of the applications and services in the healthcare vertical are either new or emerging.

The U.S. has a $2.4 trillion ecosystem of hospitals, physicians, pharmaceutical companies and insurance providers that will spend billions over the next five years on telecommunications services and equipment. Further, the government has placed increased emphasis on improving healthcare, while simultaneously solving the cost challenges. To that end, stimulus funding for electronic medical records, prevention and wellness initiatives, research and workforce training has already begun to flow.

The single largest opportunity for service providers in the healthcare vertical is the creation and continued expansion of bandwidth. The greatest need for network bandwidth today lies in physicians' offices or outpatient facilities that require transport of high-resolution imaging. While the healthcare ecosystem is interconnected and interrelated, there is a tremendous near-term opportunity in connecting health information exchanges (HIEs), physicians' offices that are migrating to electronic medical records (EMRs) and hospitals. Most of the big growth for the future is going to be with hospital and physicians' offices as they move to EMRs.

While there are challenges that must be addressed, the healthcare vertical largely is a greenfield opportunity for those service providers that are willing to invest money and time in exchange for a long-term ROI.

Healthcare Sector Requires TLC From Network Operators examines the opportunities that service providers have in the healthcare vertical, including areas with the most growth potential over the next 24 months. It includes an analysis of potential customers and provides examples of current solutions and case studies. It also examines the geographic landscape of the market for service providers, challenges the industry presents and trends expected in the healthcare vertical. The report profiles 10 leading vendors in the healthcare technology market.

To take advantage of the opportunities in the healthcare industry, service providers should focus on creating new or improved networks that enable transformational healthcare, which results in improved patient outcomes, uncompromised patient experience and boundary-less healthcare. The following excerpt shows the top market sectors for healthcare applications over the next 24 months, based on estimates from technology providers.
