As one of the world's fastest-growing markets, India presents a wide range of opportunities to telecom service providers and their technology suppliers. Those network operators also face some unprecedented challenges in meeting the rapid ramp-up of demand for telecom services. Increase in subscriber growth, the launch of 3G services and the deployment of broadband wireless access services, including Long Term Evolution (LTE) trials, are combining to push India's telecom infrastructure to the limits.

To accommodate soaring traffic volumes and to prevent network bottlenecks, India's network operators must build next-generation networks to carry voice, data and video on the same transport network efficiently. For that reason, the upgrade of optical transport networks (OTNs) is a top priority for Indian operators as they overhaul their network infrastructure to deliver increasingly bandwidth-intensive services to businesses and consumers.

Indian telcos must balance escalating costs associated with increasing capacity/operations complexity and lagging revenues behind increasing traffic in a challenging economic climate. They must transform their networks to reduce the cost per bit while maintaining QoS. Ethernet and optical transport will play an important role in the transformation of networks to meet these challenges. This need for innovation in transport network is a key enabler that can provide high quality of experience. Huge potential exists for vendors who are into both IP and optical market.

We expect packet-optical transport systems (P-OTS) to evolve and get adopted in India over the next few years. This will provide higher integration between the transport layers – eliminating the need to install different systems for each function.

India Gears Up for an Optical Transport Network Boom focuses on efforts by Indian operators to deploy optical technologies in their aggregation/metro, which include Carrier Ethernet and metro Ethernet, and long-haul networks that comprise of DWDM, OTN, ASON and ROADM. It outlines the state of India's OTNs and identifies the key technology trends that are driving optical network investment in India. The report also identifies product developments geared specifically to the Indian telecom market from three technology suppliers
.

Indian telcos are transforming their optical network from linear/ring to mesh with multi-degree connectivity. With more degrees of freedom, ROADM is becoming essential in the core network, reducing capex. Although the adoption of ROADM by Indian telcos is a recent trend, in many of the new core networks ROADM has become the default building block, since it enables setting a new light path without sending a technician to the site.
