The global transition to electricity smart grids is creating new business opportunities for broadband power line (BPL) technology vendors, driven by the requirement of utility distribution system operators for real-time, two-way communications networks in the electricity distribution network. This new communications infrastructure will support functions such as automated meter reading, the delivery of electricity usage and pricing information to in-home displays, the command and control of smart in-home devices (e.g., smart thermostats, heating/air-conditioning systems and white goods) and support for plug-in electric vehicles and home micro-generation (e.g., solar panels and domestic wind turbines). In recent years, many BPL vendors have repositioned themselves as communications solutions for utility smart grid providers. Several have considerably reshaped their businesses to address this opportunity, for example by enhancing their software capabilities or broadening the range of communications technologies they support. Most have de-emphasized their BPL access solutions in their marketing collateral, although they may support this application if required. The best opportunities for BPL vendors are in Europe, Asia/Pacific and Latin America, where there is strong momentum behind using power line-based technologies for smart metering communications. In the U.S., the design of electricity distribution networks, with a small number of households per MV/LV transformer, makes the business case for BPL for smart metering more difficult, and alternative technologies, particularly private wireless mesh, have gained early support. However, beyond smart metering, there are opportunities for BPL worldwide for MV substation communications. Timing of smart grid development is also important. BPL vendors have comparatively mature solutions compared to emerging high data rate PLC technologies, such as Prime, and equipment is already available. Many BPL vendors are ready to address utilities' smart grids requirements now, whereas high data rate PLC solutions are still under development and have not been widely field tested. In addition, utilities will look for a vendor they can work with. In this context, several BPL vendors have forged close ties with utility companies with which they are working to develop solutions to smart grid challenges.Smart Grids Boost Broadband Power Line Communications examines the role of BPL communications in the context of the global development of utility smart grids and provision of broadband Internet services. It reviews the way vendors incorporate BPL into their solutions and compares their approaches. Finally, it profiles nine leading vendors of PLC solutions for utility smart grids. Narrowband PLC technologies have historically offered data rates ranging from around 100 bit/s to a few kbit/s. Faster narrowband PLC technologies are emerging to meet the higher bandwidth demands of smart grids. The following excerpt provides an overview of the main PLC and BPL technologies and standards that are being considered for smart grids. Standards such as G.hnem and HomePlug Green PHY mainly address in-home applications, such as support for plug-in electric vehicles and home automation.
Suppliers profiled in this report include: Ambient Corp. (OTCBB: ABTG); Amperion Inc.; BPL Global Ltd.; Corinex Communications Corp.; Current Group LLC; Kaicom Co. Ltd.; Nuri Telecom Co. Ltd. (Kosdaq: 040160.KQ); Power Plus Communications AG (PPC); and Sagemcom SAS. 目次
