As the TV and video consumption habits of consumers around the world become more sophisticated, regulations are relaxed, allowing TV content to be delivered by more and different companies. The footprint of fast broadband networks also continues to expand quickly, and the wind looks set fair for vendors of IPTV systems. Yet IPTV – the delivery of TV and video content over a managed IP network that also supports additional, interactive services – has been a notoriously difficult business for service providers to get right.

Telco-delivered IPTV is growing around the world in terms of numbers of service providers and subscribers. Various analyst figures suggest the number of IPTV subscribers worldwide was around 25 million in mid 2009, growing at a very fast rate of about 50 percent per year. The growth is coming from all over the world, in all markets, with a pattern that follows the deployment of broadband networks and shows interest in IPTV from cable operators in many markets, particularly Europe.

It is universally acknowledged that IPTV systems need to handle greater volumes of video content as users begin demanding multiple concurrent streams of broadcast and VoD content – using more TVs in more rooms, as they do with cable TV – and more HD content becomes available. 3DTV is also starting to appear, and looking further ahead, some vendors see other reasons why the networks and systems delivering IPTV will need to be able to scale to support data volume growth. Interactivity of IPTV services is developing quickly, and services are converging with OTT Web-delivered video content.

One of the most active areas of scaling IPTV in 2010 is the extension of managed TV and video services from the conventional IP network and STB to multiple screens: TV, PC, and mobile device. Many vendors are demonstrating how multi-screen services might work, though admitting that the details of the services are going to be specific to each service provider: no clear service pattern is yet emerging.

IPTV Scaling Presents a Multidimensional Challenge examines how IPTV systems are changing in response to growing demands from customers and service providers. It examines how systems deal with increasing reach and numbers of subscribers, and with growth in the amount of content and data volumes for managed and unmanaged delivery. It assesses how systems are evolving to deliver to multiple devices, and how IPTV platforms are supporting the development of innovative applications. Eleven leading IPTV system vendors are profiled, with a focus on those with end-to-end or near end-to-end capabilities.

Sample research data from the report is shown in the excerpts below:

  • IPTV systems must scale in other ways, too, related to content volumes and quality, and how users choose to view and interact with TV content. These aspects of scaling carry technical challenges right along the chain from content rights acquisition and content ingestion through management of the devices on which the content is consumed and the systems that ensure that consumers enjoy a first-class experience. The following excerpt summarizes these overlapping aspects of IPTV scaling.

  • Suppliers profiled in this report include: Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU); Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO); Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC); Espial Group Inc.; Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.; Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT); Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT); Nokia Siemens Networks, a joint venture of Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) and Siemens AG (NYSE: SI; Frankfurt: SIE); SeaChange International Inc. (Nasdaq: SEAC); Technicolor SA (NYSE: TMS); and UTStarcom Inc. (Nasdaq: UTSI).
