Never before have cable MSOs had so many options from which to choose for their in-home customer premises equipment (CPE). The set-top box (STB), the primary cable component inside millions of US homes, is morphing, expanding, and extending itself with new features and functionality. STBs are shrinking into small devices to turn digital signals into analog, growing into intelligent boxes that can handle multiple types of video, and extending their capabilities through home networks, mobile smartphones, and broadband-connected devices like the iPad.

The past decade saw the growth of digital STBs, followed by the proliferation of HD and HD DVR boxes during the last five years. As a new decade unfolds, cable operators can select from an expanding list of devices to handle video content for their customers. Depending on various household needs, cable operators today can deploy dual-tuner HD DVRs, digital terminal adapters (DTAs), next-generation STBs, digital gateways, smart remotes, or applications for connected devices. They can support ITV, IPTV, or even 3DTV.

The increasing options for cable CPE reflect the ongoing redefinition of what cable is and how the industry will deliver its services. Cable operators soon must make up their minds about the service options that they want to provide through their STBs and other devices, or they risk becoming a deer in the headlights.

STB manufacturers are challenged to keep pace with increasingly wider cable system needs and a more fragmented marketplace. Globally, STB sales were down 8 percent as of August 2010 compared to the year before, according to In-Stat Research.

For operators and suppliers alike, the level of digital options can open new avenues – or produce gridlock. In the fast-moving market of digital innovation, companies must be able to move quickly and choose the capabilities that best fit with their architecture and customer interests. The worst mistake is to commit to a device platform or software solution that leads to a blind alley of obsolescence. The redefinition of the STB will continue, offering new opportunities and challenges for suppliers that need to keep pace.
