Passive optical networking (PON) is a well-proven technology at 1 Gbit/s and 2.5 Gbit/s, with falling costs and growing deployments. Many service providers are planning to use PON as their main broadband access technology. Unlike DSL, PON can scale to 100 Mbit/s and above per subscriber for residential and business connections. 10-Gigabit PON further extends the advantage that PON gives over alternative technologies and is backward compatible with existing PON solutions, giving a smooth migration path for service providers and subscribers.

Semiconductor devices and optical components are key to the success of both Gigabit PON and 10-Gigabit PON. Both the head-end system and the subscriber box require sophisticated and highly integrated PON controller devices. Optical transceiver modules for PON integrate several optical components and high-performance analog devices. The reduction in the number of components required and the cost of those components has had a major impact on the overall cost of delivering PON-based services.

Service providers' new focus on PON is generating new opportunities for semiconductor vendors, optical component vendors and telecom equipment manufacturers. The migration to 10-Gigabit PON is starting with asymmetric 10GEPON for residential subscribers and some symmetric 10GEPON for business. Companies are making plans now for the migration to XGPON from GPON starting in 2013. The winners will be those with a consistent approach across Gigabit PON and 10-Gigabit PON, delivering an easy migration and cost-effective scaling for service providers and subscribers.
