As automakers struggle to refinance, restructure and retool to cope with the economic downturn, they’re also challenged to produce increasingly fuel-efficient, less-polluting cars and trucks, buses and vans. A growing number are including electric vehicles in their product plans. The benefits of electric vehicles are clear: they don’t depend on oil-based fuels, hydrogen or other gases for power; they release no greenhouse gases or other harmful pollutants into the atmosphere, and you can recharge them pretty much anywhere that has an outlet.

As a result, NextGen Research forecasts the market for Electric Vehicles will grow from the meager 9,300 units sold worldwide in 2008 to the more than 350,000 electric cars, trucks, vans and buses that will be sold in 2013.
