It analyzes the opportunites and trends for three segments of this market: software that enables easier connectivity over cellular infrastructure for M2M applications ("connected device platforms"); software that enables wireless sensor networks (WSN) to be more easily integrated into sensor-based M2M applications ("WSN system software"); and software that enables remote devices to be more easily integrated into M2M applications ("M2M application platforms").

Each of the three segments just described encompasses its own set of vendors, features, functionality, and market trends. In general, however, all three market segments are characterized by vendor communities consisting of relatively small, privately-held companies located mainly in North America and Europe. ABI Research forecasts that the total global market for M2M software, as defined above, will rise from approximately $192 million in 2009 to roughly $2.1 billion by 2015.
