サマリー

This product tracks and examines the augmented and mixed reality ecosystem as the market continues to grow and evolve, highlighting company activity across the value chain and verticals. While not yet an exhaustive list, the company database is updated on a semiannual basis to further expand its coverage, as well as to add new entrants and account for consolidation within the industry. The company database also includes a list of companies that are operating or supporting both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications; this could be discrete AR and VR applications or mixed and/or merged reality functions.

ABI Research puts 40 more companies on its radar in its AR & Mixed Reality Market Tracker

AR/MR market is quickly gaining momentum; over 250 companies globally already on the grid

Singapore - 02 Nov 2017

With the Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) market continuing to scale up quickly, ABI Research has just added 40 companies to its AR and MR ecosystem tracker. Growth is spreading globally, but China is showing a significant uptick in activity. In fact, of the 40 AR/MR companies added into ABI Research’s Market Tracker, 25% are Chinese companies.

“North America dominates the AR market with the leading technologies, accounting for the largest share in terms of total market revenues. Asia Pacific is the second largest market with fast growth, thanks to its population, economic growth, and increasing adoption of new technologies,” says Marina Lu, Senior Analyst at ABI Research. “China leads Asia Pacific in AR and MR usage, attaching significant importance to gaming, education, and real estate. China’s massive mobile internet population provides a huge market for AR content consumption, which brings great opportunity for China search engine giant Baidu to entrench itself in smartphone-based AR. Another two dominant Chinese Internet giants, Tencent (social) and Alibaba (e-commerce), have also started investing in mobile AR.”

Both Apple and Google have opened up the mobile device ecosystem even further for augmented reality, through ARKit and ARCore respectively. Apple is continuing  its AR acquisition trend through the purchase of eye-tracking company SensorMotoric Instruments. In October 2016, Google also acquired an eye-tracking startup, Eyefluence. Acquisition throughout the market will continue to ramp up as larger companies look to get involved in the market; this will be met with an equal increase of new companies entering the space. New entrants such as HMD company RealWear and display provider WaveOptics continue to expand the AR/MR roster.

“Continued AR development from Apple and Google will bridge the gap between enterprise and consumer in a way that has not yet been seen in the industry. ARKit reaching all iOS 11 devices is already a massive install base, and the addition of more Android devices over time through ARCore will create a total addressable hardware base of over a billion devices in a very short amount of time,” concludes Eric Abbruzzese, Principal Analyst. “This compounds on the promising smart glasses market taking root in the enterprise, with increased efficiency and safety drawing commercial customers to AR and MR devices.”

These findings are from ABI Research's Augmented/Mixed Reality SI and VAR Market Tracker report. This report is part of the company’s AR & Mixed Reality research service, which includes research, data, and analyst insights.

ABI Research Pinpoints 244 Companies in First Augmented and Mixed Reality Market Tracker

London, United Kingdom - 12 Apr 2017

In its first ecosystem tracker for the Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR), ABI Research pinpoints 244 companies operating in the space worldwide, with this number expected to continue to climb. Data overlay and hands free usage, whether through passive AR or interactive and spatially aware MR, is providing significant value to early adopters. Given its current growth trajectory, the global markets will together exceed a total market revenue of $95 billion by 2021.

“Increasing demand led to a more compelling, albeit complex, market,” says Stephanie Lawrence, Research Analyst at ABI Research. “There is significantly more opportunity for companies across business models than even six months ago, with a need for devices, content, developer tools, professional services, and more to drive growth.”

The most common business model is one that focuses on AR and MR applications, software, and content distribution, with 45% of the companies identified currently taking this approach. Core technology and application development tools and services are also gaining ground in the market, with 66% of listed companies deploying combinations of such practices across a wide multitude of market verticals.

Enterprise use cases will dominate the AR and MR markets, accounting for 94% of device shipments in 2017 and still responsible for 89% of shipments in 2022. Verticals include logistics, retail, commerce, marketing, technology, media and entertainment, and manufacturing markets.

Companies active in the competitive landscape range from large hardware and content providers such as Google and Microsoft, to development tools and services providers like PTC/Vuforia, Upskill, and Wikitude. Energy, manufacturing, and logistics verticals are the dominant enterprise markets for smart glasses comprising nearly 60% of smart glass shipments in 2021.

“No matter the industry, AR and MR devices afford workers the ability to view detailed information regarding their current task directly in their line of sight,” concludes Eric Abbruzzese, Senior Analyst at ABI Research. “It is this universal, widely applicable benefit that will fuel both the AR and MR markets moving forward and ultimately lead to heightened productivity.”

These findings are from ABI Research’s Augmented/Mixed Reality SI and VAR Market Tracker report and Wearable Device Market Share and Forecasts report.
